Can Longwood win back-to-back Big South Championships?[/caption]

The preseason softball poll and honors were released by the Big South today and Megan Baltzell was named the conference’s Preseason Player of the Year. Baltzell bombed 30 home runs for the Big South champs a year ago, which lead the country in the category. Her 30 home runs, 184 total bases, and .984 slugging percentage were all Big South records. Baltzell also added 78 RBI on the season.

Beyond Baltzell, the Lancers were picked to finish third in the conference behind Coastal Carolina and Campbell. The Lancers did end up with three first place votes though:

1. Coastal Carolina (4 1st Place Votes): 74 points
2. Campbell (1): 68
3. Longwood (3): 67
4: Winthrop: 46
5. Charleston Southern (1): 43
6. Radford: 41
7. Liberty: 30
8. Gardner-Webb: 21
9. Presbyterian: 15

Longwood will begin their defense of the Big South title February 15 in the Lancer Leadoff Tournament against St. Joseph’s, Georgetown, and Bucknell.
