Just like that, the first season under head coach Jayson Gee has drawn to a close. The Lancers fell to a talented, defensive minded Gardner Webb squad on Wednesday night in Conway, SC by a margin of 81–65.

I think the most important thing to take away from the 2013–2014 season is that Coach Gee is really working toward building something significant in Farmville. Listening to him speak, it’s easy to understand that Gee is focused and dedicated to turn this program into a legitimate Big South threat. His passion for Longwood is really creating an outstanding culture around Lancers Athletics as a whole.

I just want to point out a few quotes from the Big South post game press conference. Gee talked a lot about the future and what people can expect of Longwood basketball in the coming years.

Coach Gee sounded confident about the incoming recruiting class and the future of the program. Coach explained that “We’ve got some horses in the stable, we will be back. Make no mistake about it, what you saw this year, you will never see again.”

During the post game press conference, Lucas Woodhouse even chimed in and said “the program is just going to skyrocket. Coach Gee knows what he’s doing with recruiting and we’re going to get guys in here.”

Coach Gee touted Woodhouse and talked about the fact that recruits are coming to Longwood in part because they want to play with an elite point guard like Woodhouse. That high praise is warranted even though the Big South assist leader received no conference recognition after the conclusion of the regular season.

I don’t want to get bogged down in the season and recruiting just yet. But we here at LancersBlog will be sure to bring you the most up to date discussions throughout the rest of the year.

It’s an exciting time for Longwood University in its 175th year. Coach Gee has teamed up with Athletic Director Troy Austin and President Reveley to put Longwood on the map. The Longwood basketball program experienced some impressive firsts in Gee’s first year on campus. It will only get better from here. Buckle up and hold on tight because Longwood fans are about to experience something special in the coming years.
