Longwood Softball fell short of their goal in 2014 of another Big South Championship, but they still had a lot to celebrate with a 40 win season and numerous conference and national honors. At the top of that honor roll was catcher Megan Baltzell who was named the Big South Player of the Year for her efforts during her junior campaign.

Baltzell came into this season as the NCAA reigning “Home run Queen” after blasting 30 in 2013, a Big South single season record. This year Batlzell became a more complete hitter for the Lancers and was also walked A LOT. Starting all 56 games for Longwood Baltzell finished the year batting .448 (11th in the country) and posted the NCAA’s second base on-base percentage at .581. To put her season in perspective, she only struck out five times the whole year.

Baltzell will continue to rack up accolades with one more season left at Longwood. There is no question that she’ll leave the school and the conference as one of the most decorated players in history.

Emily Murphy was named to the All-Big South First Team with Batlzell and Justina Augustine, Elizabeth McCarthy, and Libby Morris were named to the second team.
