In this edition of Future of Food I want to talk about a company I have been keeping up with for quite some time now: Gotham Greens. Facebook of all places first introduced me to this company. As more and more areas become urban world wide we are going to have to figure out how to get clean, local veggies into these huge cities. Enter Gotham Greens. They believe instead of having to transport the products into the city why not just grow everything right here in urban areas…more specifically on rooftops. This super local growth has some positive implications on pricing and quality of the produce.

Brooklyn Rooftop Greenhouse Facility

“Gotham Greens is a worldwide pioneer in the field of urban agriculture and a leading regional producer of hyper-local, premium-quality, greenhouse grown vegetables and herbs.” — Taken off Gotham Greens website

Gotham Greens has built and operates 4 rooftop greenhouses in New York and Chicago. They are able to provide a diverse customer base year round with local grown premium quality produce. The Brooklyn facility which was built in 2011 measures over 15,000 square feet and can annually produce over 100,000 pounds of leafy greens. These facilities are a triumph in environmental sustainability and I hope they can expand and grow as a company in the near future into more cities. I will definitely be continuing to keep tabs.

Gotham Greens remains a company that I have a lot of excitement for. Hopefully next time I am in New York I can arrange a tour of one of the greenhouses. As we work to try to inject local, green foods back into urban communities projects like what Gotham Green is doing will be crucial.
