Fotu scores twice, quarterback Palandech runs 70 yards for touchdown

Defensive lineman Anthony Fotu scored two touchdowns and quarterback Kurt Palandech scored on a 70-yard run as the Laney College Eagles opened the 2014 football season with a 48–33 victory at Sacramento City College on Sept. 6.
The Eagles, ranked sixth in Northern California, face a far stiffer test in their home opener on Friday, Sept. 12, when they play host to perennial power City College of San Francisco. Game time is 7 p.m.
Laney powdered the Panthers 68–0 in the regular-season finale a year ago, and was a bit wary about the home team. Things change rather quickly in community college football from year-to-year.
In this game, the visitors jumped off to a quick 7–0 lead in the first quarter when Garrett Anderson threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Butler with 10 minutes, 16 seconds left in the period.
Sacramento then drove 75 yards in 15 plays to tie the game at 7–7 when Justin Moore threw a 3-yard scoring pass to Jordan Morrison.
But the Eagles took the lead for good with 58 seconds left in the quarter when Palandech outran the Sacramento defense to score on a 70-yard run for a 14–7 lead.
Fotu intercepted a pass and ran 42 yards for a touchdown with 11:51 left in the second quarter. The PAT was missed and Laney led 20–7.
The Panthers scored again to cut the lead to 20–14, but Palandech threw a 1-yard TD pass to Nick Pletschette and then completed a two-point conversion pass to D. Jenkins for a 28–14 halftime lead.
Forrest Ferguson scored on a 6-yard fumble recovery to open the scoring in the third quarter and then Fotu fell on a Sacramento fumble in the end zone to extend the Laney lead to 41–14 with 12:21 left in the period.
On the Eagles’ next possession, Anderson scrambled around and threw a 67-yard scoring strike to Patrick Cheek with 9:39 left in the third quarter to give Laney its largest lead at 48–14.
The game was pretty much over at that point.
Palandech carried five times for 118 yards and completed nine of 14 passes for 63 yards and a touchdown.
Anderson, who was on the team last season, was 9-of-17 for 125 yards and two touchdowns.
Neither quarterback threw an interception; the Eagles did not have a turnover.
But Laney was penalty-prone — the Eagles were flagged 17 times for 123 yards.
