Laney College President Tammeil Gilkerson confirmed Tuesday that former Laney college student Oshiana Thompkins succumbed to injuries she suffered during a mass shooting that occurred on Oct. 31. She was 19 years old.

Five Bay Area residents were killed at the Halloween party at Airbnb rental home in Orinda when gunfire erupted at the party, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Four more victims were critically injured.

Thompkins was remembered by her family as “kind, sweet, and funny,” with “the innate ability to light up a room with her laughter and smile,” according to Gilkerson’s mass email addressed to the Laney community.

Thompkins’ family shared that her last act of kindness was to donate her organs and save as many lives as possible, according to the email.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with Thompkins’ funeral arrangements and grief counseling.

Members of the college community who need additional support are encouraged to contact Laney’s mental health services at 510–464–3535. More information about mental health services can also be found on the Laney College website.
