Spotlight on: Campus Crime
By Robert Hinton
A Laney College employee was approached aggressively in the student parking lot and robbed of her purse during daylight hours on Aug. 16.
The suspect is still at large, but the incident is being investigated by the “Alameda Sheriff’s office and other law enforcement agencies,” according to a Peralta Police report.
At approximately 3:20 p.m. the employee was followed by a man through campus to the parking lot on East Eighth Street. The employee lost sight of the man when she reached the lot and proceeded to her car, according to the police report.
When the employee got into her car, the man who had been following her re-appeared, opened the passenger side door of the employee’s vehicle, and demanded the employee’s handbag before pulling it from her hands.
The suspect ran toward the Lake Merritt BART Station. The employee was not injured during the robbery. The purse was found near the BART station, but most of the contents were missing.
The suspect was described as an adult black male, approximately five-foot-ten to six feet with a thin build. If you see an individual acting in a suspicious manner and matching this description anywhere on Laney campus please contact Peralta Police at 510–466–7236.
Use caution entering and exiting campus and be aware that people may be targeting the Laney community. If there is a serious or dangerous incident, call 911. If you would like to view Laney College’s safety and emergency protocols go to www.laney.edu/personalsafetyandsecurityservices/.
