Downtown Berkeley Sliver Pizzeria offers only vegetarian pizzas with a rotating daily menu.

The only thing that can beat the smell of pizza fresh out of the oven is the taste of pizza fresh out of the oven. One of the many restaurants available to Berkeley City College students is Sliver Pizzeria on Shattuck Avenue, where the scent of cheese and fresh bread tempts passerbys.

Sliver pizzas are always vegetarian and offer vegan and gluten-free options as well. Sliver only offers one type of pizza daily and lists the pizza of the day for the upcoming week on their website. A salad of the day is available to complement your pizza.

Although the original location is now closed, Silver has two locations in Berkeley and one in Oakland. The original Sliver location opened on Center Street in Berkeley in 2013.

The downtown Berkeley location is a convenient place for students to get food since it’s near the Berkeley City College campus. Slices are served right as pizzas come out of the oven, which means students can grab a quick bite and head back to campus.

Sliver also sells pizzas that can be baked at home.

Sliver’s prices are fair for the amount of food you get, ideal for a student on a budget. A whole pizza costs $21, while one slice is $3.25.

When I visited Sliver, the day’s pizza selection was corn, zucchini, yellow onions, mozzarella, and French feta cheese, topped with cilantro, garlic olive oil, and lime.

Most of the tables were taken by the time I paid for my food, with many young people standing in line to get food with their friends.

Once I ordered my pizza, I sat down at one of the small tables in the plaza outside the restaurant. The mixed flavors of feta cheese, contrasted with the sweetness of the corn, were an unbelievable taste combination to have on a pizza.

Personally, I would have liked the cilantro, garlic and olive oil to be a bit stronger. The unexpected zucchini is a nontraditional pizza topping, and was not my favorite, but was not all that bad overall.

As I enjoyed the outdoor atmosphere with fellow pizza lovers, people could be seen laughing and enjoying their day. The length of the line fluctuated, but the restaurant was filled with people relaxing and enjoying their meal.
