Tower Watch — E.T. can’t phone home

How many of Laney’s 23 blue emergency phones are operational? Tower research reveals that six are functioning properly; one functions though inaudible; 11 are labeled “out of service”; and five are out of service though not labeled so.
How far have we come in 10 years? The Tower ran a page one story on Dec. 8, 2005, under the headline “Alarming situation at Peralta,” which confirmed that out of 47 blue emergency phones throughout the district, only 11 were operational.
Let’s hope it doesn’t take a tragedy to bring corrective action.
