Transcript

Hello everyone and welcome to Practical Spanish. My name is Zakary and today we’re going to learn a bit about la clima y las temporadas, weather and seasons.

Now, before we get into it, I want to explain how I categorize things here. I try to follow the CEFR, which is Europes scale of language proficiency. This falls into the most basic level, A1. I strongly recommend immersing as early as possible, but I understand and sympathize with how hard that is in the beginning.

That’s why all my A1 episodes will be in English and uploaded separately in Spanish. A2 and above will be all in Spanish, with key words repeated in English, to challenge you and I and push ourselves even further.

Don’t forget to check the description for resources, key terms, and other helpful things.

With that, let’s go!

No matter where you are in the world, you’ll always have a few things. The sun and the moon, El sol y la luna, of course. You’ll also have the four seasons, las cuatro temporadas. Spring, summer, fall and winter, or la primavera, El verano, el otoño, y el invierno.

What’s not always guaranteed, however, is everything else in and from the sky. Over the next several sentences, you’ll be introduced to and given a chance to test yourself on the various types of basic weather events that you would see in many places. Please be sure to check the description and transcript to review these words and get some additional vocabulary. Also remember that the Spanish version of this episode will be up by next Monday.

When the sun shines here, it is very hot!

Las nubes allá aporten normalmente mucha lluvia.

The clouds normally bring rain there.

When the moon is bright, there are cool shadows under the clouds.

In the Autumn fog, a lot is hidden.

The winters here are freezing with temperatures below zero outside.

The Spring breeze is very relaxing.

¿Cuál es tu temporada favorita? ¡Para mí, es el invierno!

What’s your favorite season? For me, it’s winter!

¿Te gusta la nieve o el calor?

Do you like the snow or heat?

Is it cold outside? No, it’s cloudy and raining, but it is hot!

Take some time and listen to those again. Think about how you might use them on your own and don’t forget that narration, mental or actual, is very useful for retaining something like this. Now, let’s have a few fill in the blank exercises. I’ll wait for a few seconds on my end to give you a chance to pause. Try to complete the sentence on your own with a word that makes sense. If the word you pick still makes sense in that context, that’s fine! Just make sure you’re using the right ending for gender and number, if it applies.

Alright. Ready?

En el invierno, la clima normal…

In winter, the normal weather…

hace frío, está helando, está nevando.

is cold, is freezing, is snowing.

En el otoño, el sol…

In Autumn, the sun…

brilla, hace calor.

shines, is hot.

Los días del verano…

Summer days…

están nublados, hacen mucho calor, están brillantes.

are cloudy, are very hot, are bright.

Las mañanas de la primavera están…

Spring mornings are…

ventosos y frescos.

windy and fresh.

So, how did you do? Were your answers any different from mine? Let me know. If you learned something today, then great! Let me know that as well!

That’s all we have for today, but it’s useful to get some repetitions in forming with correct grammar and speaking basic things like this. I hope this helped!
