Language Learning: I Finally Gave in to Anki Flashcards
When rigid philosophies hold you back
Hard truths will always slowly trickle into your life, slowly at first, then suddenly. There will be a tipping point where the cost of not acknowledging the truth is higher than the cost of acknowledging it.
Truth often disguises itself as a high barrier obstacle. An impossible challenge that you’re meant to go around rather than accept head on.
You’ll tell yourself, “There must be some other way around this barrier.” Then set out determined to find it.
Most likely the impossibility of the challenge itself is a sign you’re meant to confront it directly.
Life won’t work out until you run head first into the tsunami.
My dilemma with the Finnish language is how to reach the B1 CEFR level by pure pattern recognition. I stopped studying vocabulary and grammar directly, because I immediately lost my engagement with learning. Rote memorization always immediately made me lose interest in studying at all.
I preferred to learn naturally through media consumption and context clues, similar to how a child learns.
