In yesterday’s blog post, I talked about how most of our ideas and thoughts are far from being original and unique because at one point in our lives we’ve all had the same similar ideas and thoughts somehow.
But the most important thing to remember, if you want to be original, is to work with your creativity in order to bring those ideas to life in your own unique way.
However, there is actually another phenomena that Elizabeth Gilbert talks about in her book Big Magic.
The idea is that ideas/thoughts are separate entities floating around trying to find someone to work with.
And if they decide to pop up inside of your mind, you have the responsibility to take care of them and to bring them to life somehow or else they’ll just leave and go to someone else.
In her book, Elizabeth Gilbert talks about this book idea that she had gotten once upon a time.
She had started to write the idea down and she had started to work with it but unfortunately, she slowly left the idea behind.
She forgot about this idea and little by little, the idea disappeared.
But little did she know that the idea wasn’t just disappearing from her own mind but it was actually running away into another person’s mind.
Fast forward to a couple of years later, Elizabeth Gilbert talks to one of her friend who proceeds to tell her about this amazing book idea that she had and that she is working on.
While the friend was telling Elizabeth Gilbert what the story was about, Elizabeth Gilbert was shocked.
It was her book idea!
At first, Elizabeth Gilbert’s story sounded crazy to me.
But then I realized that that phenomena could very well happen to any of us.
Just think about all those times that you’ve said the same exact thing as a friend at the same exact time.
Sure, you could say that it’s just “coïncidence” or that it’s due to the fact that you and your friend know each other so well but maybe it’s just the simple act of an idea/thought traveling between you and your friend.
It’s as if this idea/thought was it’s own person and it decided to take a train from your mind to your friend’s mind in order to spread itself out.
It’s like ideas are the people and our minds are the different train stations.
Ideas just travel from one person to the other and when they want to work with you, they just get off of the train and they stop by your mind.
If you decide to work with the idea then the idea can grow to become this amazing thing.
But if you leave this idea hanging then it’ll just pack it’s bags and leave.
It will go and take the next train to another person’s mind.
So if you have an idea or a thought, I think that you need to nuture it and work with it so that it can grow to become a great idea.
It doesn’t have to be a great idea at first and you don’t necessarily need to know what to do with it at first, but you need to keep on playing with this idea.
You need to put a little effort into it.
Do something with it, anything.
You don’t have to go big!
But if you really like this idea then you shouldn’t let go of it because if you do then it’ll just leave you to go inside of somebody else’s mind.
Somebody else that will put in the effort and that will help this idea to become whatever it was meant to be.
