Fear For My Life

Hi, I want to kill you because I don’t agree with your opinion, doc.

One of the most under appreciated aspect of being a doctor is that patients threaten you all the time.

Sometimes they threaten to sue.

Other times they threaten to be a nuisance.

But every once in a while, they threaten to hurt you. And you fear for your life.

Sure, some people would argue that if a patient is making such threats that you could call the police. But that wouldn’t really help when you’re already hurt (or dead).

Fundamentally, it comes down to why society has developed this sense that it’s okay to be a jerk to your doctor (or nurse, or any health care provider for that matter). This extreme sense of entitlement makes me want to puke.

No shit it isn’t okay for a patient to act this way just because he’s sick.

But what the fuck. They do it anyway.

It all comes down to a lack of accountability for patients and extreme accountability and regulatory oversight for doctors. Patients do what they feel they can get away with.
