When a website is crawled by search engine robots, they access a site’s robots.txt file first. Robots.txt instructs search engine crawlers on what is and is not allowed to be crawled on your website.

What is Robots.Txt File?

The robots.txt file is a simple text file that informs Googlebot about the areas of a website that can be crawled by the crawler or not. Also, a reference to the XML sitemap can be included in the robots.txt file.

Before the search engine bot starts indexing, first, it searches the root directory for the robots.txt file and reads the instructions given there. For this to happen, the text file will be saved in the root directory of the domain with the name: robots.txt.

This robots.txt file can be created using a text editor. With each file consisting of two blocks. First, one specifies the user agent to which the instruction should apply, then follows a “Disallow” command after which the URLs to be excluded from the crawling is listed.

So you should always check the correctness of the robots.txt file before uploading it to the root directory of your site. Because even the slightest of errors can cause the bot to disregard the instructions and possibly include pages that should not appear in the search engine index.
