Drake: Just Another Disappointment to Black Women

Anyone who has read at least one of my pieces knows I usually steer clear of mere “entertainment” news, however, this story got under my skin so much so that I went against my own instincts and decided to write this piece to express my feelings on the subject. It was recently reported by several media outlets including the Source (.com) that Drake has had a love child with a French porn star named Sophie.

Now, successful and/or rich black men having relationships and children with white women is nothing new and is much to be expected. However, what makes Drake’s case somewhat different, and even more hurtful to me as a proud black woman (who is very happily married to a wonderful and good black man), is that Drake has built a very lucrative career on uplifting the much disrespected and undervalued black woman.

I found this aspect of Drake to be his one saving grace. I myself would bang Drake’s musical homage to black women, “Make Me Proud,” often and even did so during my recent graduation cerebration. Moreover, Drake seemed to be one of the few black male rappers in the game who has made it a point of being seen and performing regularly with black women. I also want to point out that Drake has been romantically linked to a plethora of beautiful, successful and strong black women including Rihanna and Serena Williams; again, something that is becoming rarer and rarer in today’s Hip Hop industry.

Yet and still, all of this came to not when Drake somehow managed to carry on a secret relationship with this (plastic surgery loving, gold digging, and fame crazy) white woman and then to father a child with her whom was born last year. All the while, black women (who have arguably been Drake’s most loyal and fervent fans/supporters) were blissfully unaware and convinced that we had a companion in the game. It wasn't until Drake was “outed” by fellow rapper Pusha T that we, the public, become aware of his relationship and of his child (whom he apparently didn't want and whom he only seen once but supports financially nevertheless).

What’s worse, is now this woman, who has done nothing in life but use sex to get what she wants, is selling her “story” for all its worth while living more than comfortably off of Drake’s financial support. There are even reports that state that Ms. Brussaux has been offered her very own reality TV show. What???

And while, I am all for interracial relationships (although black women always get the short end of the stick in this area too), I cannot stand a brotha who professes to love and admire black women and yet the minute he gets a chance (money) goes out of his way to have white women on his arm. Moreover, these brothas father children with these women and continue to pass along their wealth and assets to those whom have the most already.

We can now officially include Drake in what I like to call the “White Woman Only Club” right along with Kanye West, Chris Brown and Tyga. Just another black entertainer obsessed with white women and a huge disappointment to black women. Sista’s we can do much better:)
