Spanish Job Market Tech Trends — 2017 Q4

What are the top tech trends in the Spanish job market in Q4 2017? We look at tens of thousands of blog posts and leverage Big Data tools to learn more about the tech trends that are shaping the Spanish job market.

Methodology

At EmpleoPost, our team runs a massive jobs aggregator that lists tens of thousands of jobs in Latin America and Spain. Our research division is able to use this dataset to answer all sorts of historical and real-time questions about the job market. By looking at the types of jobs that are being advertised, and leveraging Python’s natural language processing libraries, we can learn more about the trends that are shaping the economy today.

With that said, what has the research actually shown us? And what does this tell us about tech trends in Spain?

Programming Language Trends in the Spanish Job Market

What were the most popular programming languages in the Spanish job market in Q4 2017? We looked at the number of job posts made from October to December 2017 that mentioned particular programming languages. Annnd…here are our results!

We see that the results mirror the trends that past research has found in the US, though with some differences. We compare it with data from December 2017 obtained from the Indeed terms search.

Java tops both lists, which makes sense: Java has been around for a while, and is still the tool of choice for plenty of team around the world. JavaScript is second-most-popular language in both the US and Spain. This also makes sense, given the popularity of web technologies in 2017. We start to see some differences from the third-most-popular language on, though.

PHP is significantly more popular in Spain, and Python a bit less popular. This could be explained by a preference for PHP-driven web frameworks. On the other hand, PHP could also not be losing out its share of the tech space to other, newer technologies, such as Node.js. There could be a number of explanations for Python’s lower levels of popularity in Spain. It could be less popular because fewer people choose to use it within a web framework setting, or perhaps there is a smaller scientific python community (Data Scientists, Engineers, and the like).

Other Tech Trends in the Spanish Job Market

We also looked at other, non programming language trends in the Spanish Job Market. What were the top tech-related skills that employers were looking for in Spain in 2017’s fourth quarter? We analyzed at the top 500 most common skills that companies were looking for in the fourth quarter. By choosing the skills that were only tech-related, we are able to get a more complete picture of the Spanish tech job market.

We find that SQL tops the list. This is unsurprising: SQL’s role as a database querying language has made it a highly desirable skill in today’s job market. We see that the remaining trends largely revolve around modern web technologies. The latest HTML and CSS technologies are in high demand, featuring in around 2% of all job postings. Finally, the most popular front-end web application framework in Spain seems to be Angular, having beaten out React, Ember, and other competitors.

What do these tech trends tell us about the Spanish job market? It looks a lot like the larger tech market, with a few key differences. We see that web-based technologies are alive and well within the Spanish job market. Apps are being built using modern front-end web application frameworks and using the latest web standards. The programming languages and tech terms being used suggest that the Spanish tech job market is mirroring the trends occurring in the larger international community.
