đBook Review: Ethic in the AI by Sara Degli-Esposti
The original title of the book is in Spanish: âÂżQuĂ© sabemos de? La Ă©tica de la Inteligencia Artificialâ de Sara Degli-Esposti
This book by Sara Degli-Esposti goes deep into the ethical considerations surrounding the development and deployment of AI technologies. The book provides a comprehensive overview of how this technology works, how it is trained, and what challenges and responsibilities come with creating intelligent systems that can make decisions, often with significant societal impacts such as perpetuating bias and inequalities.
Some of the main points to highlight:
- Degli-Esposti discusses the core ethical principles that should guide AI development, including fairness, transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights.
- Discussion on: Is the GenAI really creative? After the success of ChatGPTâs adoption by users, there have been plenty of other applications for images, videos, music! Ah, letâs not forget the DeepFakes đ
Letâs see this example:
A chatbot trained on Ruth Bader Ginsburg RBGâs work âWhat would RBG (probably) say?â Check out the images below.
As it is mentioned in the image above this âWhat would RBG (probably) say?â is just an experiment but what about someone âskipsâ this ânoteâ and starts following these ârecommendationsâ with no further research or actual counseling đ€
- The robots đ€! We mostly think about robots when we think or are asked about AI.
Should the robots be âservantsâ for humans? Letâs recall the Asimovâs Laws! Also, here are some of the most famous robots nowadays!
The book inspires to reflect on the robots and how the Human-Machine interaction should be! đŠŸ đȘ because this will highly impact the society!
- Trust. Not everything you see online is real! There is plenty of research on how videoconferences are impacting our communication and teamwork skills, just when weâre seeing each other through a screen, and also research on how Social Media impacts our mental health (I think, no longer explanation for that topic, for now!).
The âmeaningful social interactionsâ MSI is the degree of interaction of a publication with people close to a user. In the beginning, this sounded like a good idea to promote those publications with more âlikesâ, âcommentsâ and so, however, it didnât turn out well when toxic content or fake news were spread all over the place :S
Letâs watch out with what is trendy and how we interact with that. - Regulatory AI Frameworks. So far, the European Parlament has promoted a debate about Ethical aspects of regulatory frameworks about AI, robotics and related technologies. The USA through its White House Office of Science and Technology Policy has written a âDraft bill of rights for artificial intelligenceâ which could be applied to software systems that can affect the rights, opportunities or public access from its citizens to critical services or resources.
- AI and the future of work. There will be no more jobs for humans? Due to the Generative AIâs potential, there is the âfearâ that there will be an AI that can do the jobs of an architect or journalist, however, the author says: â letâs see the AI as a job companion not a replacementâ.
The author ends the book with a question:
Before empathizing with androids, it would not be appropriate to empathize with the other living beings that we have around us and whose life (and quality of life) depends so much on our decisions.
Also, with this quote:
If the well-being of humanity is what concerns us, the negative impacts that arise from artificial systems, as well as the lack of assumption of responsibilities by the people who sell and buy such machines, remains the most urgent ethical debate. of AI. (Birhane and Van Dijk, 2020)
Some call to action:
- Letâs reflect on how automated decisions that impact our daily lives could be influenced by hidden biases.
- Think about the importance of transparency in the technological tools that we use.
- Letâs think about how we can contribute to the ethical development of AI from our positions as citizens or professionals.
