1. Cleanse Your Heart

Before Ramadan starts, work on purifying your heart. Repent and seek forgiveness. Search for any animosity or ill feelings towards others and forgive those who have wronged you. Protect your heart from any negative influences. How are you spending your time? What kind of media are you consuming? Who are you surrounding yourself with?

2. Build a Personal Relationship With Allah

Start by setting aside a few minutes each day to just talk to Allah and make dua. Be grateful. Repeat alhamdulillah whenever you have a spare moment or even try keeping a daily gratitude journal. Develop a daily relationship with the Quran, even if you only read one ayah a day.

(O Muhammad), when My servants ask you about Me, tell them I am quite near; I hear and answer the call of the caller whenever he calls Me. Let them listen to My call and believe in Me;8 perhaps they will be guided aright. (Quran 2:186)

3. Set Goals

After Ramadan, what person do you want to be? What steps can you take to become that person? What is the thing that, if you achieve it, you will feel like you had a successful Ramadan? Choose 1–3 goals to focus on for the month. Try breaking it down like this:

  1. break a bad habit
  2. add a good habit
  3. temporarily cut something out that you might be overly attached to or waste a lot of time on

4. Make a Plan for Charity

Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was the most generous of people and he was even more generous in Ramadan when Gabriel would meet him. He would meet him every night of Ramadan to study the Quran. Thus, the Prophet would be more generous than a nourishing wind.

Ramadan is the best time of year to increase our giving. Think about how you can push yourself out of your comfort zone when it comes to giving this Ramadan. Whether it’s time, energy, money, or a skill, we all can stand to strengthen our giving muscles this Ramadan.

5. Prepare Your Space

Do something to get yourself and your family excited about Ramadan! Do some spring cleaning, create a corner for worship, buy new prayer clothes, and decorate your house to welcome the month of Ramadan.

6. Learn More About Ramadan

Take a moment to learn something new about Ramadan or remind yourself of something you have learned before. Understand the intricacies of why we fast and the spiritual benefits of fasting. Learn about the history of this blessed month. Read about the revelation of the Quran. Find out how the companions of the Prophet ﷺ used to prepare for this month and how they used to spend it.

7. Set Your Intention

While this pointer may be the last on this list, it is actually the most important! Take a few minutes before Ramadan begins to reflect on why you are participating in this blessed month and ask Allah to keep your intentions pure.
