Earlier this year LaunchGood, in partnership with the Muslim Council of Britain, launched a unique programme to support mosques struggling to manage finances during the Covid-19 pandemic. #SupportOurMosques has so far helped raise over £440k for over 130 different mosques around the UK. Mosques have been supported through a range of webinars, coaching, online tools and competitions.

About Jummah Grants

As a continuation of this programme, the platform has launched Jummah Grants to incentivise community giving for participating mosques. Each Friday, there will be a daily competition for mosques to garner the highest number of individual donors on their LaunchGood page with the hope of receiving a grant ranging from £1000-£250.

Grant Sponsors

Grants have been made possible through the generosity grant sponsors Penny Appeal UK and Mercy Mission, alongside Jummah Grants campaign donors.

Penny Appeal UK is a humanitarian charity set up in 2009 to provide poverty relief across Asia, the Middle East and Africa by offering water solutions, organising mass feedings, supporting orphan care and providing emergency food and medical aid.

Mercy Mission is a non-profit organization founded by Dr. Tawfique Chowdhury. It focuses on supporting Muslims around the world to return to their faith and help them build exemplary Islamic communities in order to fulfill the greater goal of benefiting humanity.

Harris Iqbal, Interim CEO of Penny Appeal, said “We are honoured to be partnering with the #SupportOurMosques campaign to provide grants to small mosques here in the UK every Friday to help them get through lockdown. Our mosques are there for us when we are young, as we grow older, when we get married and even when we pass away. Just as these institutions are here for us, we must be there for our mosques in their time in need.”

The programme is specifically designed to support smaller mosques in the UK who have less access to funding mechanisms and are at higher risk during the Covid-19 pandemic and so the scheme is only available to mosques that receive an annual turnover of less than £250k. However mosques outside of the UK, or with a larger turnover are still able to take advantage of the support provided by LaunchGood and its partners through the usual #SupportOurMosques initiative.

#SupportOurMosques Campaign

The SupportOurMosques campaign was set up on the 10th April 2020 as a collaborative effort between LaunchGood and the Muslim Council of Britain.

Since it’s launch, the campaign has helped masjids raise in excess of £450,000 from over 45,000 donors across the world. Together, masjids have attended over 13 live webinars and has 135 masjids registered in its programme.

Zain Miah, Europe Director of LaunchGood said “The SupportOurMosques initiative is a genuine effort to support masjids find their way through the everchanging landscape that coronavirus presents. Masjids have adapted, they have stepped up. Now, with the help of our grant sponsors via Jummah Grants, we can help masjids further cover their costs, sustain themselves and most importantly, incorporate forward-thinking changes in their fundraising as they begin to look towards the future.”
