An unnecessary introduction

If there was ever a hotel that needed no introduction, it’s The Ritz. The only five-star hotel in London that is still British-owned, it’s an undisputed celebrity haven and English icon. A favourite of royalty and a much sought-after filming location, the hotel is truly a legend and has been for much of its 111 years. But, my recent stay held a few revelations for me and may for you too.

Surprise! The Ritz LOVES children

You may not think of The Ritz as a family destination, but it is. The hotel’s culture is one of approachability and this includes the smallest family members. This is evident in the way children are warmly greeted and so obviously welcomed everywhere within the hotel. Plenty of care went into designing the children’s program as well — from robes that fit to in-room game consoles. Each child receives a welcome gift and though this is not uncommon among luxury hotels, the fact that the gifts are now completely age-appropriate is. To design amenities children would love, the hotel did something extraordinary — they asked children what they would want. This feedback was poured over and became the basis for the program change. In addition, families have access to children’s books, complimentary ice cream in the restaurants, guaranteed interconnecting rooms, cots and help with hiring a babysitter. For children and those young at heart (like me), The Ritz has two collectible stuffed bears. The newest is in full bellman costume and doesn’t yet have a name. My vote is for Bernard the Bellman. It has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

It’s a family business in more ways than one

It is a credit to any company when a son or daughter follows a parent into his or her line of work. This situation is a relatively common one at The Ritz. Some employees have been at the hotel for upwards of 20 years. After that amount of time, colleagues feel like family. Plus, The Ritz is family owned. Are you seeing a family theme like I am?

The Ritz is the only hotel with a Royal Warrant

Behind the front desk you may notice the royal arms on display. This Royal Warrant for Banqueting and Catering Services is the first and only ever issued to a hotel. The Ritz is terribly proud of it and they should be as it signifies the hotel has the royal family’s approval and patronage. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II hosted the 54th birthday party of The Prince of Wales in The Ritz Restaurant and many of the family have stayed overnight.

The historic William Kent House is part of the hotel

On the main floor, you may wander into the William Kent House by accident. The previously private home has been seamlessly connected to the hotel since 2006, the year after it was purchased by the hotel. The transition is nearly unnoticeable thanks to the brilliant renovation where similar or identical materials were used for décor consistency. The house’s dining room is of particular note as the stunning ceiling and fireplace were painstakingly restored to their original beauty. Private events are now held here and there are two guest rooms upstairs.

It is possible for staff members to outnumber guests

The Ritz has set its own service standard so high that many people are required to achieve it. There is an average ratio of 2 staff members to every room. Thanks to this, if there is anything a guest needs, it’s likely there is someone to help very nearby. The seventh floor, in particular, is known for a high ratio of staff members to guests. It is the most private area of the hotel and where some of the most famous guests stay because of it. The Green Park Suite is located here. Devoid of the signature gold wall and ceiling details, it is instead bedecked in silver. A private butler comes with the room and the hotel’s Rolls Royce Phantom is available. You’ll also find the spa tucked away on this floor ready to be a true escape from all that is outside on the city streets.

Just as expected

Now for a fact that won’t surprise you at all — the hotel is the most romantic in London. Even as I write this, I realize it’s an understatement. A five-star rating is more about service than it is about surroundings and The Ritz delivers on both. It happened to be our wedding anniversary when my husband and I stayed. On three occasions staff members congratulated us. When I asked how they knew, one said the staff is briefed on special occasions during their morning meeting. For a romantic and thoughtful touch, a gorgeous (and delicious) little cake was waiting for us in our Junior Suite room along with Champagne and a personally written note. After we tucked in, we took a walk by Buckingham Palace. Need I say more?

Appreciation!

My thanks to Jackie McDevitt for her invaluable assistance in arranging my stay and to Joi Izilein who doesn’t know what a talented storyteller she is.
