As a former tennis player, my favorite to watch has always been Serena Williams. She brings excitement, variety and lots of ticket sales. Recently in an interview, the skilled and powerful player revealed some of her goals for 2019.

Williams became a professional tennis player when she was just 14 years old. Over the span of her career, her accomplishments are quite impressive, one being ranked No. 1 in the world for 319 weeks by the Women’s Tennis Association.

Neil Lee, a fan of Williams, stated,“She’s one of my favorite players to watch not only because she dominates but I like that she stands up for what she believes in. She’s authentic.”

She also has won 23 singles grand slams and is a four-time olympic gold medalist. I was one of millions who celebrated for Williams when she won her 23rd Grand Slam singles title at the 2017 Australian Open, while being two months pregnant with her first daughter.

Williams went on maternity leave but after 10 games in 2019 she was ranked No. 1 on the WTA Tour. She is keeping her big goals for 2019 a secret but she revealed that some of what she needs to work on deals with the mental aspect of her game.

She said, “Maybe I just need to stop thinking so much and just go out there and relax. My next goal is to just take a deep breath.”

With all her years of playing against some of the toughest competitors in the world and in some of the most intense environments, Williams continues to wrestle with the ability to calm her mind in games.

“I have learned that you must accept your mistakes and move on. The pressure is real when playing in a match and if you think about your mistakes too hard, it can affect your whole level of play,” Ryan Jackson explained, who has been playing tennis since age 12.

This sport requires immense discipline and mental toughness so players must learn to condition the mind to deal with the pressure of the game.

Another former tennis player, Summer Blue mentioned “If you don’t work on getting mentally tough, it will take a toll on you when playing and can make you feel defeated.”

Williams has been able to dominate on the court with her power and knowledge of tennis but has found that the most challenging part is her ability to relax and get out of her own head. She has competed in several tournaments in 2019 and is expected to play in the Italian Open this month.
