KAIST, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, is a leading research-oriented university located in Daejeon, South Korea. It was founded in 1971 with the mission to educate and train the next generation of scientists and engineers and to promote technological innovation and economic growth in Korea.

KAIST has a strong focus on research and innovation and has established itself as a world-class research institution in various fields, including science, engineering, business, and social sciences. It has a highly selective admissions process and attracts some of the brightest and most talented students from Korea and around the world, often described as the “MIT of Korea”.

Dr. Choo completed his PhD in Computational Science and Engineering at Georgia Tech in 2013, where he worked as a Senior Research Scientist from 2011 to 2015. He won an IEEE VIS’20 10-Year Test-of-Time Award for IEEE VAST 2010 Paper ‘iVisClassifier: an Interactive Visual Analytics System for Classification Based on Supervised Dimension Reduction,’ in 2020, Best Student Paper Award at ICDM’16 in 2016, and an Outstanding Research Scientist Award at Georgia Tech in 2015, the Best Poster Award at IEEE VAST(as part of IEE VIS) in 2014, and he was nominated as one of the four finalists for the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group dissertation award in 2013. He worked at Korea University’s department of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science and Engineering as an associate professor for five years, before joining KAIST in 2020.

Dr. Choo’s research focuses on developing new techniques and algorithms for image and video synthesis and translation, neural machine translation, question answering, recommender systems, visualization of complex datasets. His work has been published in prestigious conferences and journals in the field of machine learning and artificial intelligence, cited more than 7,000 times in the last 5 years.

One of Dr. Choo’s recent research projects involve altering various attributes of a given person’s facial image, such as gender, hair color and style, garment, facial expression through generative AI. He has also been developing a tool called RetainVis, aimed at helping medical professionals explore and analyze electronic health records (EHRs). RetainVis uses advanced visualization techniques to help doctors identify patterns and trends in patient data, which can help improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.

Dr. Choo is also an excellent teacher and mentor. He has supervised numerous PhD and MS students, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry. He currently has about 40 PhD students, and 12 Master students in his lab. He is known for his rigorous approach to research, his passion for teaching, and his dedication to advancing the field of computer vision and natural language processing.

In summary, Dr. Choo is a highly respected scholar and professor in the field of computer vision and natural language processing. His work has the potential to make a significant impact in a number of domains, including healthcare and we are fortunate to have him as a strategic advisor.
