Laws affect every aspect of our lives, from the air that we breathe to the food that we eat. As a society, we create laws in order to deal fairly with one another.

Not all laws are the same. Laws differ in authority depending on the source of the law, how it was made, and who can enforce it.

Why should it matter to you? As a citizen, you can influence how our laws are made, directly (e.g., by voting on a ballot initiative) and indirectly (e.g., by voting for legislative members). In order to do this, you need to know the hierarchy of laws and those who are responsible for making and enforcing them. Here is a quick summary of both.

This is a repost from Lawgood’s blog at www.blog.lawgood.io.

Not all laws are the same. Every informed citizen should know the differences.
