6 Things to do During the Summer Before Law School

#1 : GO TO THE SOCIAL EVENTS

There will likely be a few social events before school starts, go! It is important to start establishing relationships with your peers. While these events may look different because of COVID, meeting your classmates and upper-year colleagues is invaluable. For me, the first month of school was the hardest. I really leaned on my classmates and upper-years for support.

#2 : BUY A SUIT

It is important to have a nice suit (or two) for school. You will need to have one for some events and conferences. Have one that is neutral, like navy blue or grey. There are some very fashionable coloured suits, but they are not always appropriate; it is better to have one you can always wear. Your upper-years or the faculty should tell you in advance if you need one for the first week, but it is a good thing to keep on your mind!

#3 : READ INTERESTING CASE LAW

Becoming familiar with how decisions are written might make your first few days a bit less intimidating. However, keep in mind that it might be hard at first. Some decisions are written in ‘legal-ese’… but, being familiar with case law will be an asset to you. Don’t get too bogged down if you find it hard to read or kind of dry, they get better the more you know! Try CanLii and look up some key words in ‘Document Text’. I have included the link below and a few links to cases at the bottom of this article. Take a look!

#4 : CONSIDER FINANCES

Save money! Apply for a student loan and/or line of credit in advance! The sooner you can situate yourself financially, the better. When you start school you will want as few outside stressors as possible. Do yourself the favour and take care of your finances well in advance, just in case there are any hiccups in the process. Oh, and while your budgeting, triple the amount of money you give yourself to spend on coffee.

#5 : BUILD HEALTHY HABITS

Establish a good routine now. Find some type of physical activity you enjoy-biking, yoga, going to the gym, running, walking, etc. Eat healthy, whole meals. Limit your unnecessary screen-time. Make time for free time.

#6 : Time Yourself Reading

You may think you are a quick reader now, but I promise that you will get way faster. I must admit, this is not something I have ever done. However, one of my professors told us he thought it was something we all should have done. Pick a book this summer and note how long it takes you to read. Next summer, read it again and compare the times. Seems odd, I know… but noticing how much faster I read now, I wish I would have done it.
