Lawyers are Cheaper Than a Mechanic
Breaking Down the Cost of Professional Services
One thing I hear over and over again, usually while being pestered for free advice (that people argue with because Google, Esq., JD, BS, told them something different), is how expensive lawyers are.
Okay, and your point is?
Access to justice is a very real problem. I can’t deny that. There are a multitude of very real people out there who need real legal help and have no way to pay for it. Hell, when I was practicing, my biggest joke was that even I couldn’t afford to hire me.
As with any joke, there was truth in it. My first year at the bar, I was billing out at $210 an hour. That sounds like a lot for dressing cute and showing up at court to say some words.
Leaving aside the hours and hours, like hundreds of them of research and preparation, let’s look at the cost and how we get there.
Let’s look first at a mechanic. I love mine. He keeps my POS van on the road. That van’s name is Bernice and I love her. She’s big and white and ugly as sin. But she’s reliable. Can’t kill the bitch. Best $2200 I ever spent. Five years and 340k on her and she’s still running like a newly minted Jag.
