Layer Protocol Partners with Origin Protocol

Today Layer Protocol is excited to announce a partnership with Origin Protocol, a set of protocols that enables buyers and sellers of fractional use goods and services (car-sharing, service-based tasks, home-sharing, etc.) to transact on the distributed, open web. We’re excited to be working with the Origin team on pilot programs to help decentralize shared assets and empower a shared future.

The Tragedy of The Commons

The tragedy of the commons is as old as economics itself, most recently rearing its head in the new wave of sharing economy companies. Connecting reputation to how individuals use shared assets — like shared fleets of bikes and scooters, in home-sharing, or car-sharing — can help create a sustainable social environment to allow the sharing economy thrive over the long term.

Ubiquitous Reputation

Currently in many shared-economy ecosystems users with excellent behavior are effectively subsidizing the bad behavior of others. While asset sharing companies often have their own existing reputation systems, they do not have an easy way to cross-reference or share this information with partners. As a result, abuse occurs as some users move from what platform to another and evade their true reputation. Conversely, users with excellent reputations aren’t effectively rewarded for being a good actors in the sharing economy.

Layer will be available on the Origin Protocol platform to help bring a more-complete and accountable reputation system to different applications and ecosystems. All developers using Origin to develop decentralize applications will have Layer available to them for reputation management of their users.

Layer is looking forward to working with the Origin Protocol team on pilot programs to work towards a more decentralized world that empowers individuals and opens communication and cooperation between stakeholders.

Layer Protocol will be first adopted by Spin

Spin is a leading personal mobility platform in the US that allows users to rent stationless e-scooters, e-bikes, and bicycles within designated cities and campuses. Spin is live in over 50 markets in the US, and has served almost a million rides in less than a year.

Layer Protocol will be Spin’s de-facto reputation and rewards system. Spin will reward users through reputation increases and LRX tokens for desired user behavior such as frequent ridership and responsible parking.
