Omnichain Support For Caldera Application-Specific Rollups Now Available
Today, we announce support for Caldera, enabling omnichain interoperability between Caldera rollups and the 40+ other LayerZero-supported networks. With this, LayerZero will be widening availability for Caldera beyond the existing integrations with Lootchain and Manta Network.
Why Caldera?
Application-specific blockchains have recently gained quite a bit of traction. Launching transaction-heavy projects such as games or social applications on traditional, monolithic blockchain architecture, can be extremely costly and gas intensive. Caldera solves these issues by enabling projects to deploy their own custom optimistic rollup — allowing off-chain transaction execution while still inheriting the security of an underlying parent chain (i.e. Ethereum, BNB Chain, etc.). This rollup architecture facilitates the creation of highly-performant and scalable blockchains, tailored to the needs of individual projects. When deploying a Caldera rollup, developers are able to select their native gas token, data availability layer, and settlement layer. Caldera rollups can currently be deployed through OP or Arbitrum Orbit Stacks.
Why LayerZero?
With the ease of launching custom rollups provided by Caldera, there needs to be a scalable solution to facilitate communication between different blockchains. LayerZero enables cross-chain composability to and from any supported Caldera rollup. With LayerZero, users can, for example, collect in-game assets received from one rollup, to use in DeFi applications on another. It also allows developers running applications on different chains to seamlessly expand them to a Caldera rollup. We share the vision of customizability, by offering configurable oracle-relayer pairs and number of block confirmations before sending messages, enabling developers to take control of their entire security stack.
At the center of our collaboration with Caldera stands LayerZero Endpoints — immutable smart contracts deployed individually on various chains in order to facilitate omnichain interoperability with Caldera rollups and the other LayerZero-supported networks. These Endpoints manage the transmission, validation, and receipt of payload messages, enabling seamless communication among smart contracts across different blockchain environments. Caldera’s innovative custom rollup architecture, offering off-chain transaction execution with the security of an underlying parent chain, aligns seamlessly with LayerZero’s scalable solution for cross-chain composability. Together, they empower users to effortlessly transfer assets between rollups, while shared principles of customizability allow developers to control their entire security stack, fostering a collaborative ecosystem.
LayerZero currently supports two Caldera chains — Lootchain and Manta Network. Lootchain is optimized specifically for NFTs and gaming projects in the Lootverse. Manta Network is a modular blockchain built for zero-knowledge (ZK) applications.
In LayerZero’s ecosystem, the growth of both Lootchain and Caldera serves to prove the significant impact of interoperability. Through LayerZero, over 140,000 unique wallet addresses were able to benefit from cross-chain capabilities on Lootchain. Similarly, on Manta Pacific, LayerZero was able to help the ecosystem achieve over $20 million in total-value-locked, within two months of its mainnet launch. This was made possible by allowing users to leverage LayerZero’s cross-chain messaging stack in order to transfer liquidity from other networks, without the need for middle chains or wrapped assets. This reflects the importance of seamless and secure interoperability that LayerZero enables, while highlighting our commitment to fostering a cohesive and collaborative environment where projects built on Caldera can thrive and evolve.
