LayerZero and Initia are developing an interoperability standard for Cosmos that enables Cosmos SDK based chains to connect to LayerZero-enabled chains, allowing for omnichain interoperability.

Why Cosmos?

LayerZero is an omnichain interoperability protocol that has facilitated over 135 million messages across 80+ blockchain networks, with over 200+ applications using it for messaging. LayerZero allows these applications to send and receive arbitrary data between chains that cannot natively communicate with each other.

The Cosmos SDK enables developers to create tailored blockchains known as appchains. Adding support for Cosmos is the next logical step for LayerZero in fully becoming an omnichain interoperability protocol — a full mesh network of every chain in crypto.

Initia Labs and LayerZero Labs are developing an interoperability standard for Cosmos, enabling developers to extend existing and new applications to and from Cosmos chains using any chain supported by LayerZero. This interoperability solution is in the form of a Cosmos SDK Module rather than a smart contract. It allows LayerZero to support Cosmos chains with various VMs or those without any.

Initia Labs and Initia

Initia Labs, the team behind Initia, has developed a network for interwoven rollups by fusing an L1 with a system of application-specific L2s.

Initia’s tech stack allows teams to build scalable and sovereign Cosmos SDK-based L2s in multiple VMs, simplifying the user experience for developers and end users in a new multi-chain universe.

LayerZero Labs appreciates Initia Labs’ role in the development of an interop standard for Cosmos.

Conclusion

The Cosmos vision of creating an “Internet of Blockchains,” combined with Initia Labs’ concept of “interwoven” chains, aligns seamlessly with LayerZero’s goal of omnichain interoperability across all blockchains in crypto.

LayerZero Labs is excited about the development of an interoperability standard for Cosmos with Initia Labs.
