If You Know Great Music, You’re Already Rich

Currency so good it makes you dance

We all have those friends. They make the playlists. They grab the aux. Their texts are mostly links followed by extreme statements. If you’re reading this, you’re probably one of us.

“STOP EVERYTHING AND LISTEN TO THIS”

And you know what, we’re usually right. You should stop everything and listen. We’ve figured out a currency that’s existed long before cash money. In his seminal book on virality, Jonah Berger describes social currency:

“Just as people use money to buy products or services, they use social currency to achieve desired positive impressions among their families, friends and colleagues.”

Music as money

So we already know how valuable great content can be, but why am I so certain it’s music that’s the gold standard?

  1. It’s Universal

There isn’t a country in the world that doesn’t listen to music on a consistent basis, and unlike any other form of media, the top songs in one country are pretty consistent across the rest. Even better is that the top music in one culture often ends up integrated into the top music everywhere. Justin Bieber’s making Spanish pop hits. Jamaican Dancehall has touched upon everyone from Drake to Kygo. That’s currency with no limit.

2. It’s Cheap

Both to make and to listen to. $10 a month for almost every song ever made? That would be a bad joke 20 years ago. Today some of the biggest stars in the world started out with a laptop and pirated software and guess what, they made bangers with just that. Sure you can say the same for Youtube videos but is there any longevity? Do they cross cultures and stay relevant? Big no’s.

3. It Makes Life Better

No seriously, music has been shown to actually change your brain for the better. And not only that, it makes everything better. Ever been to a party without speakers? What about that moment you play a song and your friends ask you for the name? Yeah, music actually changes how we perceive the world.

Ok, so what?

First of all, don’t speak to me like that. Second, the answer to your question is another question. If music is the best currency around, then where’s the bank?

Well, hold onto your rave gear because we’re building it for you.
