Alexis Gomez- Artist, Virginia

Gomez is a special talent with aims to bridge Art and Technology. His paintings take you on a psychedelic trip if you observe too long. The sculptures and special pieces he’s created have been placed in multiple areas throughout the DMV, and his recent Virtual Reality adventures have been drawing a lot of attention as well as sparking peer creators to try their hand. Gomez also wants to bring attention to the other talent in his city showing that when collaborating with up and coming brands like SkyBox to create a Coach Jacket, that wasn’t in stock for long. The energy around Gomez stays high, he can blend in and stick out simultaneously. There’s always a question that pops up and gets you thinking before you answer. He’s a curious human just like most of us but he’s plotting on his curiosity, possibly, the questions grow in depth through conversations. Alexis is all about solutions and putting his foot down to get the job done. Check him out as he prepares for his upcoming collection and new ideas.

Coach Wave- Artist, New York

Coach, the self-taught creative, can’t be boxed or labeled. His graphics are timeless pieces and his unorthodox music hits multiple genres. He doesn’t plan things that way they just happen. His mood is the producer and director of his art. Moving from New York to DC recently welcoming new challenges. His recent drop GIX displays his many moods lovey Coachy, party Coachy, and he opens up a little for the fans. Coach seems to be able to adapt to every room he’s in and eventually become the life of the party that puts smiles on everyone’s face. Coach has proven to be an innovative creative, his process when “cooking up” can be a little unorthodox at times. Magic is the perfect word to describe Coach. The optimistic attitude inspires everyone that enters Verde Island to create freely. He’s willing to share his information and time with others who wish to create. During our talks with Coach, he would share noteworthy quotes then instantly go back into work, he would do this a few times while he was working. He speaks on his countless hours in front of his computer “cookin’ up” as he would say. He has no agenda on what’s next but after the love from GIX we expect him to soak it in before moving on to the next thing, he recently started a “Verde on film” account for his photos. Check him out via Instagram and book a session on Green Island.

Sedia Ngofa- Botanist, Maryland

Sedia Ngofa is an accredited ethnobotanist and the founder of BijouxBasket . She first began making natural products when doing hair and testing different oil and herb blends years ago, testing formulas through trial and error, she gave birth to BijouxBasket. When we spoke to Sedia she seemed to speak a lot about her family and friends, showing her selflessness and willingness to put others first. Sedia is a woman with many talents, during mid-sentence she rejoiced with excitement about a meal she made the previous night and a dish she wanted to try soon, then she continues to speak about an upcoming event she would vend at. There’s always something that can be learned when speaking with her, she does not hesitate when it comes to sharing information and resources that might aid you. The energy remains unfazed no matter who entered, she’s always smiling and providing laughter the fills up the room. Check her out at the PG Millennial Mixer in March 20th if you’re in the DMV or PG County.

• What do you love most/least about your career/craft?

What I love most about my craft is the reward of being able to see what I’ve been able to build with my own mind, body, and spirit. It’s the utmost satisfaction to hear people who’ve never known you rave about what you’ve literally created from nothing. “Getting it out the mud” is the simplest, yet most powerful way to verbalize what makes me LOVE Bijoux’s Basket for EVERYTHING it is!

What I love least? The anxiety and the steady self-criticism that comes with putting your heart out to the world in this sense. You bare your all and, you put out more than most can fathom to do of yourself in whole.

• What is the most challenging thing you’ve faced?

The most challenging thing I’ve faced is getting over my own criticism of myself. Accepting my own destiny and allowing my greatness to flow is something that is a daily situation because my success cannot and will not be capped at anything.

• Who/What inspired you to start and what inspires you to keep going?

My mother. My stepfather. My father. My siblings. My blood. My aces. My A1s. Everyone that’s ever showed me, true genuine love.

Also myself…I’ve always known my path will be different, but never knew how…still don’t…I’m just out here vibing……YKTV….good people, good money, good graces, and good gas…

• If you could spend the night out with anyone dead/alive(2–3people), who would you choose and what would you do?

Bob Marley…smoke and politic…maybe make out. Whitney Houston….spa day with a lot of wine somewhere in India or Thailand and just talk about LIFE. My maternal grandmother…Sunbeam is and will forever be the goat….I’d Just ask her EVERYTHING about her and her life…especially her organic soap line she ran for DECADES!!!

• Books or Documentaries? Recent watched/reading?

The Kybalion: the Hermetic Philosophy x Three Initiates (book), Don’t F*ck With Cats (Netflix documentary), Words of a Wanderer x Alex Elle (book consistent read)

• “We don’t dance we just pull up our pants and… DO DA ROCKAWAYYYYYY !”

*leans ALLLLLLLAAAWWAYYYYY back like its 2005*

• “Make the money…Don’t let it make you!”

(True words of a hustler gone awry! You hate to see it! Mind the people that mind you, and be about your MF BAGGG!)

Thanks for having me apart of this!

Savannah Britt- PR, Lagos/New York

Savannah Britt first came on to the scene at 12 years old when her Girlpez Fashion Magazine. This her the youngest magazine publisher and received attention Teen Vogue at time editor Amy Astley. Britt would later focus on the PR world and launched her agency, The Brittprint, taking on talents like DJ Khaled, Gucci Mane, 2 Chainz, Lil Yachty, Smoke DZA, Alessia Cara, Pelle Pelle, and others. Britt has also shared stages with powerful voices on various panels and taught branding classes in NYC and Philly. She wears many hats every day and can be noted as one of the hardest workers in the industry. While working with legendary Pelle Pelle brand Britt brought the millennial attention to a brand our parents probably attempted to get us to wear as kids and it worked. More artists were being styled in Pelle Pelle, the name drop in music came back, and even social media took notice of this collaboration, the old generation recruiting the new generation worked out. For Savannah just being in the room with people like Dapper Dan, Karen Civil, and other media titans is never good enough, she’s learning from everyone she can every chance she gets. The Afro-Caribbean scene has scene a spark this year and it would be no surprise if Britt is apart of its rise. Savannah Britt looks to take on another decade of dominating and outworking everyone, catch the tastemaker out of the country these days but you can still contact her via her site, Savannah Britt, about PR needs.

Little Baconbear- DJ/Personality, DC

BaconBear made her WKYS 93.9 debut in 2017 and the city has been enchanted by the energetic and much needed youthful presence the DC radio scene is missing. BaconBear, Khalia Canty, has become a major name in the city and music industry earning the top night show multiple times also playing over 200 local artists, interviewing the hottest acts coming up, and last year she shared information with listeners via ARTLAB at Hirshhorn’s ArtTalk. Nothing less of an inspiration BaconBear has been for the city and the next generation of little girls and black kids listening to her every day on their way to school or when they see her in the school. The hard work she puts in night in and night out does not go unnoticed, she’s recently been recognized for her contributions to Lil Baby’s “Street Gossip” project. What a great way to start off the year and decade, expect more greatness from the DJ and tune in to WKYS 93.9 night show.

Ahmad Davis- PR, Virginia

Ahmad Davis is heading the charge for the next generation of creatives in the DMV area, although he’s not labeled as a creative, his work can be seen as art. His selfless attitude is bound to pay off, the information and resources he shares with his peers and clients would be packaged and sold by capitalist on amazon. This has been a major year for Ahmad with graduating college, the success Kazi Magazine has seen, and hosting multiple events & shows throughout the DMV has put Ahmad’s name in the conversation for MVP or Most improved. The jump from last year to this year was an inspiring journey to witness. Locking in the likes of Curren$y, Key Glock, Doe B, CYN, and more for exclusives, some that may have brought forward difficulties that Davis may not have foreseen. The job always gets done nonetheless. He doesn’t plan on letting up now, follow Kazi Magazine and Medium Creative Agency to see what he does next.

• What are you passionate about? What do you love most/least about your career/craft?

I’m passionate about dreams, mainly other peoples though because I feel like my life has been one from the beginning. With that said, not all dreams are positive but I’ve always been blessed with either great times or even greater learning experiences. I love the fact that based on my ability to tell stories and build relationships I can help someone deserving showcase their talents to a broader audience. Imagine if your specific dream has a coach telling you how to get there, that would be me.

• What is the most challenging thing you’ve faced?

Maintaining your personal relationships as your chasing your dream is difficult. Learning that I am not able to help every single person I come across because it will ultimately leave me drained and unable to do things at the highest level. Learning how to balance and manage your time is one of the most difficult parts of my life. Lastly, being the source for so many makes it hard when you’re looking for the same thing. Everyone drains your battery and no one is interested in how it gets charged. It’s hard to show weaknesses because I fear I’ll discourage the people who get their hope from me.

• Who/What inspired you to start and what inspires you to keep going?

Everyone who I believe in keeps me going. I want to see so many people win just based on my genuine nature. So many people invested time, emotions, and other resources into me so I owe it to them to shine and reach my potential. That inspires me the most.

• If you could spend the night out with anyone dead/alive(2–3people), who would you choose and what would you do?

Jay Z, Ye, and Rene Descartes. Probably just grab some wine and drinks and sit at a table and just discuss different things. I’m interested in how people’s brain works and I like seeing the difference in their opinions. We all have something that makes us tick. It’s rare that I feel like I’m talking to some one who gets it. I feel as if those three would.

• What are your thoughts on the current state society is in? Or Which social issue is important to you & what are some possible solutions, real & fantasy, that can help?

I think that we are in a transition stage still so it’s a lot we have to learn about ourselves, social media, and just people in general. We are adapting to new times and until we have more time it’s hard to tell what should be changed. I think the idea that social media can get so jarring that it makes someone want to take their own life is my biggest issue. The struggle between the ears is something I’m passionate about. Schools should start teaching emotional intelligence techniques at an earlier age. This would help people understand how others work and maybe selfishness would go down. Most people do not think of the world outside themselves. That’s where a lot of us go wrong.

• Books or Documentaries? Recent watched/reading?

Storybranding 2.0 is a good one. I learn from podcasts and interviews with my favorite artists or execs.

Miles Weldon- Financial Analyst, Virginia

Miles Weldon is a Financial analyst and Co-Founder of PACT, an organization that revolves around helping the next generations of athletes and teaching them financial literacy. The world is full of selfish people but Miles is far from selfish, he shares the information and resources he obtains with his peers and the younger generation. Financial literacy wasn’t apart of his education, he feels the schools don’t truly prepare you for the real world. The skills he learned have developed through his trials and tribulations and self-teaching after graduating from college. He states that his mindset had to change to elevate pass keeping up with the Jones’s, “Stay grounded and educate yourself… When you get to that point they’ll see…” the wins will come. His aim to help his peers improve and fixing the generational wealth within the black community inspired many of his peers to follow. He’s found a way to educate through PACT for the future generation as well with a career synopsis the kids will learn how to plan for the future and a life outside of sports. Miles preaches that the need for mentors is necessary, he’s not afraid to ask for help or an answer. • What are you passionate about? What do you love most/least about your career/craft?

I’m extremely passionate about giving back to my community, financial literacy, and sports. One thing I love most about my career in government contracting is being able to track how a budget is allocated across the many defense systems in the U.S. I also like that my current company provides me with enough autonomy to continue pursuing my goals outside of the workplace like obtaining my MBA and running my nonprofit organization.

• What is the most challenging thing you’ve faced?

Figuring out which direction I wanted to go in life after college and being patient enough to let things unfold.

• Who/What inspired you to start and what inspires you to keep going?

My parents will always inspire me to be the best person I can be, having a little brother to set a positive example for inspires me to keep going.

• If you could spend the night out with anyone dead/alive(2–3 people), who would you choose and what would you do?

Nipsey Hussle, Rich Paul, Dom Kennedy. I would probably go to a steakhouse or a taco spot so we can all have a conversation and I can soak up game.

• What are your thoughts on the current state society is in? Or Which social issue is important to you & what are some possible solutions, real & fantasy, that can help?

I think society is in a pretty good place, we’re continuing to grow and with our cultures around the world becoming increasingly interconnected due to the internet. It’s dope that a lot of issues that weren’t receiving proper attention 20 years ago are being pushed to the forefront today. The social issue most important to me pertains to equal opportunity for minorities.

The easiest solution to implement would be for our communities to take responsibility for educating ourselves and our children on different ways we can level the playing field in society which I feel we’ve been doing a lot of recently. I love seeing more of us sharing knowledge and motivating one another to reach our potential.

I HAVE A FEW BRANDS. THIS IS MY PERSONAL SITE FOR ALL THINGS CREATIVE.” The first thing you see on Joe’s site, personal and direct. The Creative, Designer, has been making noise for years now with his hats and jackets that you must have in your closet. Just for that one time, you feel like pulling out some rare heat. The Creative clearly does not want to be labeled, structured, or controlled. Moving at his own pace, in his own lane, to the beat of his own drum is the own way he knows. Joe has hosted pop-up shops in various cities for his recent releases that sold out in hours, hosted lines that wrapped around blocks, and social media frenzies. “I plan on working with a lot of other creatives in Chicago and doing things that can bring a spotlight to a lot of other people out here…” He says in a conversation with Complex. This shows the selflessness of Joe. Joe and his Tiger team have prioritized educating younger people with similar passions, providing in-store talks about entrepreneurship and the business of being creative. •What do you love most/least about your career/craft?

I love the freedom to create my thoughts, interests, and imagination. What I like the least is talking while I’m working. I hate to explain myself before I finish. Just let me create and you will see.

  • What is the most challenging thing you’ve faced?

The most challenging thing was outgrowing people who I envisioned being with me forever..but not everyone wants this as bad as me. A lot of people are comfortable and I am always evolving.

  • Who/What inspired you to start and what inspires you to keep going?

My mother inspired my artistic interests and I am so proud of where I’ve come I can say that I inspire myself. As I grow I amaze myself with my own capabilities.

  • If you could spend the night out with anyone dead/alive(2–3people), who would you choose and what would you do?

I would say Prince and HooliganRadGuitar5 because I never got to make a song with both of them and I needed to have done that before they passed.

  • Books or Documentaries? Recent watched/reading?

I’ve recently been watching How-to videos on mastering Facebook ads along with learning more about emerging into the tech world. I’m evolving Haus Of Creators on another level 2020 and beyond.

DJ BoyGirl- DJ, Virginia

DJ BoyGirl is it, you’re missing it. This creative is hard to box with a label. She creates, she’s a creator, that’s it. We found out about DJ BoyGirl two years ago and been fans since. Onequa Lamb (HF)- Chef, Virginia

Onequa Lamb is the owner of Highly Favored, a homegrown Chef from the 757 that has everyone eating out of the palm of her hands or book. Her Cookbook is a bestseller that has made us better cooks than we might have been before. She saw her older sister run a catering business young, felt the torch has been passed down. Her Aunt taught her how to cook and she’s both afraid to try things her friends suggest. The numbers came fast, the random customer interaction that went viral for the customer's disrespect brought more love and support pouring in. Onequa beginning to see that she had something “crazy”, something life-changing on her hands. She viewed Highly Favored as a business that she could make timeless to be remembered by. Onequa says she’s open trying to ideas and new things, she lets it be known that she’s not perfect and she takes pride in her family recipes. She aims to try her hand at different genres of food eventually to learn dishes she didn’t grow up on. The cookbook, Highly Favored E-book, was catered to everyone and she took her time to make it perfect for us, so make sure you cop that if you haven’t yet. It might help you in the kitchen with your friends and family. Recently she’s announced that Volume 2 is being worked on, keep your eye on her.

Niyah Nel(EDL)- Entrepreneur, Virginia

Niyah Nel is the owner of Everyday Dope Life. I can describe her as a woman with many hats that gets sh*t done. No excuses. The EDL Fest has become one of the 757’s biggest events these passing years bringing out local talent and acts from outside of the state/area. This year’s lineup included Baltimore’s Bandhunta Izzy and Larry June from the Bay Area. Deeper Than Rap Podcast hosted it’s first live show at Xchange in Norfolk and a Cipher that had a lineup of heavy hitters. She managed to overcome the obstacles in her way and made sh*t happen. She comes from a musically inclined family, “all the women can sing”, she says her music knowledge was installed at an early age. Beyonce & Jay-Z are “blueprint” for her success and when she started she begins to research figures like Elliot Wilson, Karen Civil, and others in her lane. Niyah recently announced a panel event series with Tidewaterwaves called “Meeting of the Minds”, celebrating Black History Month and focusing on encouraging communication across generations. The event will be held at the Slover Library in downtown Norfolk.

• What are you passionate about? What do you love most/least about your career/craft?

“I’m passionate about, tuh lol, life and the future things that set my soul on fire. Music, people, creating, and bringing people together. It’s love. Love resonates through so many different mediums. All I do is based out of love.”

• What is the most challenging thing you’ve faced?

“Over the summer, we were to have EDL Fest’s at The Scope… and it ends up not happening. I had to go and do all the undoing, contacting, and dealing with all the business aspects that come along with canceling a major event… Financially, It set me back a great deal. I had to regroup, I still had to stand my ground, I still had to be the face, I still had to do the speaking, and still, make it do what it do.”

• Who/What inspired you to start and what inspires you to keep going?

“I’m very easily inspired… I come from musically inclined women, everyone in my family can sing. Music knowledge and the depth of that was installed into me early. Throughout my life, I felt like an outcast… I never quite fit in with people but I had always had music… I guess that’s grown with me, then when I came of age and I start to research people in the spaces I looked to occupy like Elliot Wilson, Karen Civil, Karlie Hustle, these people begin to inspire me and I started to take their lives as a blueprint. Jay-Z and Beyonce, I take their lives as a blueprint, they’ve been my favorite musicians since I was 10 years old, I feel like I grew up with them… Life inspires me, People inspire me.”

• If you could spend the night out with anyone dead/alive(2–3 people), who would you choose and what would you do?

“Dead or Alive… Three people? Jay-Z & Beyonce easily. Their life is my blueprint, I want a legacy that matches theirs. The third person can be variable, I’ll probably say a billionaire. I don’t know who in particular… Actually, I’ll say someone like Nipsey Hussle. Through Beyonce & Jay-Z, I’ll get the game on how to get here but through Nipsey Hussle, I think I would get the fulfillment of getting here. You know, the way he lived his life, the things he valued, the things he wouldn’t be moved by. Those types of things really capture me.”

“And in my time with them, honestly. I would just want to talk, I would talk their head off, I would talk their heads off. I would want to get all the game and be a sponge, soak up everything I can. I would spend a day with them and see what they do for a living…I AM A SPONGE TO THIS GAME, that’s what I want. I don’t want to go out shopping and partying, I want to learn. I want to learn how to get better every day as an entrepreneur, as a leader, and as a WOMAN in this game. I want the knowledge, I would just spend my time with them learning as much I could, soaking up all the game I could, and applying it to my life.

• What are your thoughts on the current state society is in? Or Which social issue is important to you & what are some possible solutions, real & fantasy, that can help?

“I think society is in an extremely sensitive state, and it’s really annoying. Everything’s so sensitive, you have to be so political and it’s honestly like you can’t be yourself. I think social media has a ton to do with that… The world is just coming more and more to sh*t, if you will lol… You can’t even be a comedian, or rapper, or entertainer and do what you do without having to worry about public backlash from little small things. It’s quite ludicrous, I think that’s a real problem today.

“I think the only way to truly solve the problem is to continue to be yourself unapologetically, by standing your truths. No one can tell me who to be me, no one can tell you how to be you If it offends you I apologize. I can apologize and still mean what I say. I’m not apologizing for what I said I’m apologizing for maybe how you felt about what I said. But truly, that has nothing to do with me, right? I don’t know that’s something I struggle with even personally, because I am who I am and I’m not changing for anyone. I don’t think the world needs to change because we have so many opinions because our lives are on a big flat screen. I think it’s ridiculous. I think the only solution is love, standing in your truths, be an individual.”

Escra:

• Books or Documentaries? Recent watched/reading?

“I am currently reading the Life and Triumph of Madame C.J. Walker. For the last two months, I’ve come across so many things that relate to her and her life journey, her success, and her story. I feel like, I’m coming across these things because I’m supposed to, it feels like divine timing and such like it’s supposed to relate to me and my journey in some way. I’ve been researching and reading a ton of biographies.”

• We don’t dance we just pull up our pants and… “AND PUT IN WORK! lol, Get to that money, ya feel me. We don’t dance we just pull up our pants and put in work. Get that money.”

• Make the money… “Don’t ever let it play you.”
