Staycation In The Green Heart
Now that we can’t travel far, we travel near.
We are fortunate to live in a rural area. Especially in these times of social distancing. Where we live, the population density is quite low, even for a place within a short distance of the densely populated Dutch Randstad area that comprises cities like Utrecht, Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam. You could say we live in the backyard of these cities.
This means, for example, that we can go out and about while easily keeping the advised physical distance of one-and-a-half meters. Even two would not be an issue. If we even decide to venture out of our garden. Unfortunately, it also means we have a lot of agriculture around. In itself, this is a great thing. We can see the cows that produce our milk and cheese. Fields are covered in flowers or vegetables. But these producers do have a difficult time. All their output intended for export is affected by the corona crisis.
So, while we stay home, we make a bit of a staycation out of it. We buy flowers from roadside stalls. Drive two villages over to get fresh organic milk from a milk vending machine. And we just bought some farmer’s cheese at a very good price from a place that normally sells its cheeses to Amsterdam airport Schiphol. On our way, we enjoy the vast views over the fields, the cows enjoying their spring freedom, now that they are out and about and no longer confined to their stables.
This way, we also try to find ways to support our local entrepreneurs. How are you coping with the current corona-induced reality?
