Winning leaders versus Wannabe leaders — the Art of Investing in People
Have you ever wondered what truly distinguishes exceptional leaders from those who merely talk a big game? The answer lies in a fundamental principle that is both simple and powerful: the way they value and invest in their people.
Remember my guiding mantra of principles that can illuminate your path toward becoming a successful organizational leader: Learn, Execute, Duplicate. The concepts of learning and executing may be familiar terrain to you — they are, without a doubt, crucial components of any leader’s journey to success. Learning entails absorbing knowledge and honing skills, while execution involves putting those skills into action. Both dimensions remain firmly within your control and significantly contribute to your growth as a leader.
Yet, the true transformation occurs when you elevate these abilities to a higher level, a process commonly referred to as scaling. Imagine yourself as a leader whom others find worthy of duplicating. If you can confidently answer “yes” to this question, you’re on the right track. However, this is merely the first step.
The next stride forward is equally pivotal: identifying the right individuals to replicate your efforts. And this is where the true essence of your investment in them shines.
When we discuss duplication, we’re not suggesting that you aim to clone yourself as a person. Rather, it’s about transferring your skills, knowledge, and work ethic to others. It’s about empowering them to achieve what you’ve accomplished but in their own distinct manners. Herein lies the game-changing element — your investment in their growth. You’re not merely handing them tools; you’re guiding them, offering unwavering support, and nurturing a steadfast belief in their capabilities.
Now, let’s address a crucial inquiry: What if you encounter hurdles when attempting to scale? If you find it challenging to attract the right talent or discern those who align with your mission, it’s time to engage in introspection. Are you fostering an environment that beckons potential talents? Are you nurturing trust and openness? Are you the kind of leader who compels others to say, “I aspire to be where you are, and I’m committed to working for it”?
Remember, exceptional leaders don’t simply lead; they inspire. They create a secure space for growth where individuals can open up, be vulnerable, and embark on a journey of learning. If the echo of those words of admiration and aspiration is faint within your team, this presents an opportunity for growth — within yourself.
Picture this scenario: a member of your team is prepared to take on greater responsibilities. They’ve learned, they’ve executed, and they’re fervently awaiting the next phase. Are you dedicating your time and energy to guide them? Are they witnessing the palpable influence of your mentorship? Are they expressing heartfelt gratitude for your guidance? If these questions invite hesitation, it’s a sign to reevaluate your approach.
When you embrace the path of investing in others, you’re not just molding professionals; you’re constructing enduring connections. These connections transcend conventional networks — they blossom into friendships forged through shared growth and steadfast support. And let’s face it, isn’t this the essence of success? Learning from one another, uplifting each other, and having a dependable circle.
The blueprint of an outstanding leader is uncomplicated: invest in people. It’s not about grand speeches or hollow promises. It’s about actions that substantiate your commitment to their advancement. These actions set forth a chain reaction — a culture of learning, excellence, and camaraderie that ripples through your team.
Conversely, some excel at articulating aspirations but falter when it comes to implementation. They may possess the words, but the essence is absent. They struggle to attract eager learners, to instill trust, and to cultivate authentic bonds. In essence, they’re all talk and no substantive action.
So, which trajectory do you wish to follow? Do you believe you’re a leader worthy of duplication? Have you prepared yourself for this pivotal role? Is anyone on your team eager to replicate your approach? These inquiries are the essence of your leadership journey.
Usually a common concern: how to scale, how to duplicate? This is a question that I keep hearing all the time. Let’s discuss this in our next topic. While I can certainly provide overarching insights, remember that your challenges are unique to your circumstances. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. If you have started on this journey, open up with your learning and be fully transparent and vulnerable. Only if you have a mentorship session with full transparency and vulnerability only if you are open to hearing inputs even if you are dreading to hear them, then you will gain from that session. You will begin addressing your specific situations to duplicate yourself, to scale your team. If you have not even started, then start first, try first.
In conclusion, here’s an irrefutable truth: the demarcation between triumphant leaders and those aspiring to lead is unequivocal. It’s their unwavering dedication, their foremost priority, and their fervent ardor to invest in people that truly sets them apart. As you embark on your voyage of leadership, keep this principle firmly entrenched. Your investment in people will not only shape your success but will also engender a lasting legacy of growth and empowerment.
What we learned: To be a winning leader, you must invest in people. You cannot do it alone. You must become someone whom others want to duplicate, you need to demonstrate something that others want to duplicate from you for themselves, and then you need to put your heart and soul into helping them achieve their desires. If you don’t, you will only be a wannabe leader.
Wish you all the best in this journey of duplication! Until next time, Cheers,
Amit
