One of the reasons why I love playing golf is it is fun, comfortable, and enjoyable. The game involves less physical risk compared to other games. Although with many exciting moments, golf is not about big moves making it playable. Moreover, it becomes convenient for golfers with some of the rules. For instance, you can get an additional ball played as a provisional ball. Thus, it can be much easier once you understand what is a provisional in golf in more detail.

1. What is a Provisional in Golf?

When playing golf, the rule is to play a provisional ball for each previous shot that you believe may be out of bounds or lost. You can play a provisional ball after each shot if there is a chance that it could be lost or out of bounds. This way, you can hit a provisional ball many times till you reach where you lost your original ball or is out of bounds.
2.3.When to Hit a Provisional Ball in Golf?
In a golf game, you hit a provisional ball if you suspect you lost the original ball outside the penalty area. You can also hit a provisional ball if you redeem the first ball out of bounds.
One thing to keep in mind is that you can not play a provisional ball if your ball is inside the penalty area. If you redeem your ball lost in the water hazard but also suspect it could be in trees, bushes, or spot nearer grassy areas outside the water hazard, then you can play a provisional ball.
However, you might decide that the water hazard is the only place you lost your ball. Here, you can not play a provisional ball. But you can seek relief through the water hazard relief options.
3. What Does It Mean When Your Ball is Lost or Out of Bounds?
In two situations, you redeem the ball lost or out of bounds. The first condition is when your ball has disappeared in the bushes or another position where you can not find it. Even when you have searched for three minutes, it lies as lost.
On the other hand, if the ball has crossed the designated boundary for playing the golf game and is lying outside the line, you regard it as out of bounds.

For instance, if you hit your first shot as a tee shot and it goes over the fence and out of bounds, you must take a stroke and distance penalty relief. It means you will hit the second ball from where you made your previous stroke. But you must drop the ball within two club lengths.
However, you will add a one-stroke penalty and lose the benefit of any gain and distance toward the hole. It is because, unlike other relief options, you have to play the next shot from where you played your last shot. That is the distance part of stroke and distance.
4. How Long do You Play a Provisional Ball
If you find your original ball within the designated area and within the three-minute search time limit, you can continue with this ball. Or if you determine that the ball is not lost or out of bounds, you must continue playing the original ball. As well as you must abandon the provisional shot played provisionally. There is no one stroke as a penalty of stroke in playing in this scenario.
If you find the ball and it is not in a favorable position, you can choose to hit the ball. However, you can also declare it an unplayable lie. One of the options to declare the ball unplayable is to return to the location of your last stroke to play it again.
Additionally, if you do not find your original ball within the three-minute search, the provisional ball becomes the ball in play. Now, you redeem the original ball lost. Therefore, stop playing it because it is the wrong ball to use as the ball in play.
