Magic Formula: What I learnt from company acquisition in team management

I have been involved in managing teams from the company we acquired, joining a company to manage a newly acquired company, and being in a team when our company was acquired. In these situations there are common mistakes made by managers and leaders, myself included, that not only kill the magic of the acquired company but at the same time create chaos within the existing team leading to loss of talents, businesses and shareholder values.

True Magic happens not because of how well the props are designed, not on how one performs the sleight of hand, misdirection, and optical illusions that deceive, it is the magician who can symphonies, entertain and engage, while create a sense of suspense and drama, with the right timing, turns the audiences from skepticism into belief.

Isn’t this the formula we all looking for and advertised when acquiring or merging with a company?

No matter the acquisition is for

  • market expansion of a company from different segment,
  • diversification of product/services or product company moving into solution and service company,
  • acquiring competition consolidating resource and increase shares,
  • technology advancement…
