Tapping healthcare leadership into general leadership, and vice versa
When it comes to leadership, the health sector is an area where leaders in other sectors can draw insights and expertise from, while, at the same time, the health sector itself can benefit from new developments and trends that emerge, and shape leadership, in general.
Like any other sector, it has unique characteristics that distinguish it from other sectors, and therefore, it takes a similarly unique leadership approach for a leader to produce results in that sector.
According to Davo Ruthven-Stuart, head of organisational development practice, NHS Arden and GEM CSU, who wrote the following article: “System and provider leadership: Turning tension into opportunity”, it is now the time to introduce a new leadership paradigm to the health sector, in order to literally turn the sector’s fate around.
This paradigm shift will be based on three key pillars, i.e. embracing an attitude toward fixing the foundations of the system, adopting a mindset of shared goals in a local context, and fostering appropriate leadership and management skills.
