The Hidden Joy of January Storms

She warned us not to drive across the country in January — We did this instead

Above: My Apple Maps app gave me two options for driving around a winter storm warning on Friday morning. The shorter route added three hours to the trip. Map courtesy of the author’s iPhone travel apps.

“We are not driving 800 miles in January.” Wise words from my beloved.

But New Year’s was the easiest time to get away; flights were expensive — and I assured her we could stop and get a hotel if the weather got rough.

Why worry about the weather? After all, we have 1.9 million Hilton Honor points and 7,600 properties where we can stop if we need a break.

The Joy of the January Advantage: It’s Just Us

Flashback: When I was 4-years-old attending Buttons and Bows Nursery School, my mom was the president.

When they needed to remodel, all the playground equipment was moved into our house’s empty second-floor flat, so I had an entire playground to myself.

The memory of seeing that empty playground never went away. So, the appeal of having playgrounds all to yourself remained as we drove 800 miles from Michigan to Myrtle.

A wonderful time was had by all (both of us).

Our usually packed place at the beach was 70 percent vacant. I love that.
