The real power of beauty? You can’t say “no” to the truly beautiful. Beauty makes you stop, so we lost our breath when Raquel Welch died because she always had that certain gift that poor Madonna struggles with. Welch died at 82, universally considered to be as beautiful as ever. Madonna, at 64, is still a lightning rod, a rowdy Rorschach test for all of Western Culture, helping us debate the meaning, purpose, look, and sound of beauty, ugly, and all in between.
