Increasing Employee Engagement

Employee engagement provides many benefits for employers, customers, and the employees themselves. Not only does high employee engagement result in greater productivity, but it also correlates with higher organizational success. Engaged employees are less likely to be absent from work and are less likely to leave their companies. These employees are often healthier and less accident-prone. One of Gallup Research’s chief researchers, Jim Harter Ph.D ., reports that “Engaged employees are more attentive and vigilant. They look out for the needs of their coworkers and the overall enterprise because they personally ‘own’ the result of their work and that of the organization.” The quality of their work is higher than that of non-engaged employees. A 2019 Gallup research poll indicates that highly engaged employees are resilient and take responsibility for their performance. They work to build upon their strengths and are intentional about being engaged in the workplace.

The research clearly demonstrates that employee engagement is beneficial, so why wouldn’t employers make high employee engagement a priority? Many simply don’t know how to go about increasing employee engagement. Companies looking to improve the happiness of employees can start by following these steps.

Take a personal interest in employees. Provide regular feedback rather than waiting for once-a-year reviews. And don’t just give feedback, but ask for input from employees. Employees who feel they have some input in decisions being made are often much happier than those who feel like no one is listening.
