Bite sized leadership advice

Change does not happen in meetings. Change is personal, it is a 1:1 conversation.

In a meeting we hide within the group and the group dynamic sets the socially acceptable behaviours, protecting its own and reducing conflict. The best you can achieve in a meeting is awareness.

Meetings include any situation where you are trying to change more than one person at a time; town hall events, workshops.

If your communication objective is to raise awareness, then go for it.

Do not be disappointed when the high from your CEO stepping down from stage having delivered a blistering speech and creating energy in the group fades and you wonder why nothing has changed weeks and months later.

It isn’t what is said or done in the meeting, it is the small actions that leaders take outside it that make the difference.

With our clients we always coach what we call the sustainability actions, small steps and changes which will make a big difference after the rallying cry.

This is part of our Leadership Wizdom series, bite sized leadership advice for leaders who wish to improve their leadership, but don’t have much time. For more indepth articles check out The Change Wizard
