The Price of Stamps

Bite sized leadership advice

Teams who are overwhelmed often focus on the small things, the price of stamps, because the big things are too big and too scary.

We like to feel capable and in control. Focusing on the small things helps us achieve this.

If you find your team focusing on the small things it is time to start asking open questions to find out why.

Is it confidence?

Is it the scale of the task?

Is it other priorities that are eating the time?

There will be a story there.

Help them break the big things down into manageable chunks that can be done.

As a bonus; to find out what your team are prioritising, ask them. Instead of leaping into a conversation with your agenda of 10 things, stop for a moment and ask what they are prioritising.

This gives you the chance to enquire further without raising a defensive wall.
