Netflix is the top player in the content streaming landscape and has changed what it means to binge watch tv. The content is endless and with all these shows at your fingertips it is easy to get lost.

Here, I am going to guide you to the best shows to watch when stoned so you can maximize the experience. So sit back, relax, toke up, and peruse the list below for picks that are perfect for the stoned mind.

Plant Earth

This is undoubtably the best show to watch when high. In fact, according to Google, 96% of users like the show. This is because it speaks to the instinct to want to be in nature that weed helps bring out in all of us. I can be sitting in my apartment in Manhattan and feel like I am in the African safari or the Amazon. The soothing voice of David Attenborough will be sure to help you relax as you watch nature shots that will make you ask yourself, “Is this real? How did they get this footage?”. Fun fact for you, the filming of the show employed many new kinds of tech and it took over five and a half years of continuous film time, which they cut down to the very best for you!

Blue Planet

This is Planet Earth’s sister show with David Attenborough narrating yet again, but instead of on land, the show is focused on life within the oceans. The crew captures some magical shots of coral reefs and the neon fish that live in those beautiful places. My favorite memory from this show was smoking a bong with a friend of mine and and seeing the massive jelly fish sequence on the big screen in his parent’s house. Another mind-blowing part of this show to watch when high are the hunting sequences where killer whales are going after dolphins. Most of this show is not as intense though and instead focuses on the beauty of life in the oceans.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi

I stumbled upon this documentary one day when I was smoking and hanging out. I had run through all of Blue Planet and Planet Earth and was looking for something new that would mesh with my stoned brain. I watched the preview and the images spoke to me. There are incredible HD shots of these perfect pieces of sushi being prepared in a small Japan-based restaurant. Jiro’s restaurant has been awarded 3 Michelin stars and he is considered the world’s best sushi Chef. My favorite part of the show to watch when high is the fish market scene where he walks through before it opens up (because he is plugged) and chooses from the best massive tunas on sale. Disclaimer, the show is all in Japanese so you have to watch this subtitles but it is more about the visuals than the commentary. A seat in his restaurant costs $450 and you must book months to years in advance. They have a sous chef on staff who’s only job is to massage octopus all day…

Chef’s Table

The first Netflix original on here and one of my favorite of their food shows. Chef’s table uses a similar formula to the nature shows with its mind-boggling visuals and relaxed pace and narration. The difference is that you just substitute out water buffalos and blue whales for pasta and steak. The crew follows around some of the world’s top chefs and explores what makes their restaurants unique, including the passion that drives them to innovate on culinary traditions. There are now 6 seasons of this show as it has done very well cause of people like me. It doesn’t matter at all which order you watch them in, but I recommend starting from the beginning as the first two seasons are my favorite. The score is also amazing, as the show has been nominated for multiple Emmys for its dramatic and beautiful music. Your ear buds will be soothed with classical tunes as you watch the chef work his magic.

Alpha Go

This is a much lesser known documentary than the others on this list, but it was a great watch. It was both relaxing to watch when high and also informative on the topic of Artificial Intelligence and the strides that technology has made in recent years. AlphaGo is an artificial intelligence robot that the scientists teach to play the ancient Chinese game of Go. This is a difficult task because, according to many, Go was an impossible game for a computer to master due to the near infinite amount of moves and the “human skill” element required. The documentary takes you through the development of AlphaGo from its creation up until it plays the top Go player in the world, Lee Sedol, in a show down for the ages. If you want to learn something interesting while you smoke this is a great way.

Honorable Mentions:

The Fix

A Netflix original comedy show about comedians attempting to tackle some of the World’s biggest problems (e.g., global warming, immigration, gun laws, etc.) by coming up with creative solutions for these issues. It results in hilarious dialog that will have you rolling laughing.

Coco

Yes, the Disney Pixar movie!

Pineapple Express

Get some Pineapple Express and roll a crossbow joint to toke up for this classic.

Pulp Fiction

The American crime film classic that gets even better when you are stoned. Watch it multiples times and you are sure to pick up one something new every time.

Somm

This is a documentary about people on a journey to achieve the elusive rank of Grand Sommelier, a wine connoisseur’s top status.

And there you have it — my top 10 Netflix shows to watch when stoned. Watch these as you proceed to get more and more couch locked. Let me know what you think and if you have any recommendations for me and throw me a like if you enjoy the above.
