LAND Introduction

Allodial title of digital estates that grows its value

This blog post will introduce the detail of the most fundamental and essential layer of the ‘League of Kingdoms’ ecosystem, the LANDs.

This post will cover below:

  • History of property ownership
  • LoK LANDs introduction
  • The economics around LANDs: How to earn ETH on your LANDs

History of Ownership

Ownership as a concept has been around us for a very long time. Assets and belongings were scarce and their protection played a pivotal role in the history of mankind.

A few of the examples to demonstrate this come from as old as 2000 BC in Egypt. At the primitive times, the ancient Egyptians invented the first lock system(Pin Tubler Lock) to secure their belongings (grains, tools, etc)

Among many other cases, the oldest lock in ancient Chinese dates back to the 2nd Century. Also, the head of the artisan guild in the time of Rennaisance era was lock-smiths who were respected for their mastery of crafting solid and secure locks for the influential medieval families like Medicis. The demand and sophistication to secure valuable assets only increased as mankind becomes more affluent.

Unlike the relatively early inception of the lock system to protect ownership, the concept of property ownership was a more recent one. Partly due to the fact that kings and royal families owned most parts of the world and for the shortage of effective ways to keep track ownership over vast fields, the land ownership remained in the territory.

British Domesday book of 1066 was surely one of the early attempts to track the provenance of estates but it was until the start of the Enclosure act in15th century when actual property ownership to individuals was stipulated. The clarification of property rights marked the critical transition from medieval feudalism to modern capitalism.

Aside from various interpretations of its implication, the establishment of property ownership laid foundations for efficient and effective use of the property to maximize its utility or profits extracted therein, revolutionizing the way people work and the production value chain. This led to improved productivity and primitive accumulation of capital. It would be a more familiar story about how the accumulation of capital and commodities brought about more active global cooperation and economic development. Thus, we believe that our quality of life, peace, security, prosperity, and democracy today derives from the establishment of property rights.

This video by the Thomson Reuters Foundation on property rights illustrates this point well. Please take a look.

“OK, Long story short, let’s cut to the chase. why do we have to care about the enclosure act and property rights? What does it have to do with the game? “

We were impressed by the movie Ready Player One by Steven Spielberg. It was a great trailer to preview the world after the 4th industrial revolution when much of the jobs are replaced by super-capable AIs and Robots. In the movie, people live in dilapidated towns and earn living in the virtual game world. Before being frustrated too much by the dismal depiction of the future, we found it hard not to be anxious about the shaky lives of Wade Watts, the protagonist of the movie.

We sought the reason for the instability from the lack of private space. While Wade was able to solve the enigma and earned money from the game, he lacked a proper place where he can stay by himself: He lived in a spare room of his aunt’s dingy house and log in to the game in a deserted truck which he doesn’t own either. That lack of space ownership continuously gave audiences anxiety throughout the movie.

We think it applies the same in games as well. So we decided to lay the foundation of our game economy on the LAND ownership. We put painstaking efforts to make sure that the LANDs would work as similar as actual real estate which gamers can claim true ownership of. (and can feel comfortable in😌)

League of Kingdoms will start from a genesis continent on Ethereum blockchain, consist of 65,536 LANDs. Each and every patch of the LAND will be an NFT.

Each LAND house up to 16 kingdoms. If there are other artifacts like Sanctum, mines, forests, etc., the capacity may shrink. In other words, given a kingdom is the smallest unit in the continent, each LAND is a 4x4 scale.

The LANDs can be purchased through several presale windows pre-launch, followed by a number of public sales after launch starting in May 2020.

The sale and management of the LANDs will be available through a LAND PORTAL, a web dashboard to display LAND information, and other resources.

An important character to take note of LOK LAND SALE is ‘Coordinate Ownership’. Buyers are purchasing rights for the coordinate beyond the patch of LAND you see first.

Many popular strategy games out there often have more than enough users to fill the entire genesis continent (1,040K kingdoms at max) and game companies end up having to continuously churn out new worlds. Popular one like ‘Rise of Kingdoms’, for example, has close to eight hundred servers and adding more in April 2020.

In the same vein, if the genesis continent becomes too crowded, we will create new continents in identical specs. But no worries, no matter how many continents are to be created on the blockchain, you are entitled to claim the ownership of the LAND located at the particular coordinate you own.

For example, your purchase of a LAND in genesis continent at coordinate [XXXXXX] will also guarantee your ownership and rewards of the same coordinate in any number of new LoK continents created on the Ethereum blockchain.

So it might be a good idea to secure a LAND in a good location so your LAND in any new continent will succeed. Your discerning eye matters!! 🧐

The pricing and details about the Land sale will be available in the future articles dedicated to the ‘LAND PRE-SALE EVENTS’!!

As mentioned, LANDs are NFTs carved on Ethereum blockchain, the largest smart contract platform in the world. The blockchain will ensure permanent ownership, interoperability, and secure trustless trading across the Ethereum ecosystem. Moreover, there are lucrative rewards for landlords.

To understand LAND ecology, 3 concepts should be understood:

  1. Reward pool
  2. Land level & Dev. points
  3. Reward system

A reward pool is accumulated based on a certain percentage share from the entire net revenue that is generated in-game. It is aimed to reward LAND owners’ contribution to the development of the LANDs.

The reward frequency and ratio are to be determined and announced in future postings.

LANDs start with Land levels between Lv1 ~ Lv6 at the game launch (Majorities are Lv.1). But the kingdoms built on top of the LAND and their development activities will affect the development points (“D-Points” hereafter). The D-Points then determine the Development level (“D-Level” hereafter) of the LAND. In other words, each LAND’s development points will increase at its own pace, resulting in different development across the continent.

There are two activities to raise Dev-Points:

  1. 🚜Development Activities: Dev-Point will increase as Kingdoms more actively collect resources in the Land. Any mining/gathering/collection activities by any kingdom on the land will collect Dev-points.
The Dev-points become the fundamental metric to determine the Land level.

ex) collection of XX million lumber, XX million foods will add +1 D-level to the land

  1. 💎Crystals: D-Points will increase as gamers consume crystals. Crystals are available in mines and from the game store. Another unique feature of the crystal is that consumers not only benefit from its own LAND but adjacent LANDs. This feature will boost D-Points on LANDS near the most active districts. Also, alliances may strategically purchase adjacent LANDs to optimize their alliance’s development efficiency. You can simply imagine burgeoning urban districts in the vicinity of the city centers.

ex) consumption of XX crystals will add +1 D-level to the land and adjacent lands.

Let’s take a look at what benefits can we get from highly developed LANDs.

Development benefits: Rewards, Efficiency, Resources
(a.k.a. 3 sweet reasons why you should own the LANDs)

  1. 💰Rewards: Game’s smart contract will set aside 10% of the after-tax/fee game proceeds to reward LAND owners for their development contribution. The form of reward will be in assets like the cryptocurrency of the blockchain which the LAND is on. For LAND owners to claim the accumulated daily rewards, they MUST contribute in the in-game LAND tab.

For Example, Landowners can 🚜develop resources & reserves within the LANDs (mines, farms, etc) and/or participate in developing the LAND by playing their own 🏰kingdoms (Certain actions will be considered passing the contribution threshold)

It could be helpful to refer to the diagram below to understand the process.

2. 🚜Resources efficiency: Highly developed Land will have a higher Land level and richer resources (farm, gold mines, monsters, etc) The abundant reserves will draw more active users and alliances to migrate to the LANDs. More kingdoms will enhance Dev points further, creating a virtuous cycle.

3. 🌾Resource Distribution: Last but not least, your highly developed LANDs will have more and higher-level resource mines (i.e.Gold mine) 5% portion of the resources harvested by any kingdom on the LAND will add to the resource reward pool for the landowners to claim. These resources cut do not fall on harvesting kingdoms and are generated additionally to reward the landlords. (aka. ‘Resource matching’)

These resources may be packed and minted into Resource NFTs and traded on the blockchain market places💸

An illustrating example:

1. Mr. Edward purchased a Lv.3 LAND from the LAND PORTAL

2. Mr.Edward started developing the LAND. Once his LAND’s Dev-level reaches certain point, the Land level is risen to Lv.4.

3. More kingdoms start to migrate to the Lv4 Land. As more kingdoms actively cultivate the Land , Mr.Edward decides to start an alliance.

4. He, with his alliance friends start to purchase adjacent LANDs to get more benefits from his alliance’s crystal consumption.

5. The efficient development of the Land will lead to higher Dev-point and thus, more rewards in the form of DAI and resources.

6. Mr. Edward may mint the resource into NFT and claim the rewards in DAI .

7. Mr. Edward can always take his LAND beyond the LoK ecosystem and trade anywhere across the Ethereum blockchain.
