Have you heard of March Madness, but never made a bracket before? Or is all of that “basketball expertise” thrown out of the window in March, and only March? Have no fear — LeagueDAO has you covered. Whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned veteran, we’ve got plenty of tips and pointers to build the ultimate Non-Fungible Bracket.

LeagueDAO’s bracketology 101 course features:

  • Seeding
  • Team experience/roster
  • Matchups/Coaching
  • Historical upsets
  • Go-Full-Degen

SEEDING

Seeding is one of the most important indicators in making game predictions during March Madness. Each of the 4 regions has 16 teams seeded from 1 through 16, from best to worst. Factors such as performance, strength of schedule, and conference outcomes determine tournament seeding. The best and most commonly-picked teams to make deep tournament runs are seeds 1–4; but, this is March Madness after all — upsets happen and it’s hard to predict. Everyone has their eyes peeled in search of that 1 vs 16 upset, or something close to it.

TEAM EXPERIENCE+ROSTER

This is the meat and bones of March Madness. The most important factors if you ask me. Teams with star-power and reliable players that have played with another consistently set their game apart during March Madness. There’s always squads with loaded freshman stars yet we often see veteran teams with juniors/seniors leading the way, winning the national championship game. To avoid falling into the star-player trap, check out team performances heading into the tournament. Peaking at the right time is key and momentum carries a big role in single-elimination style games.

MATCHUPS/COACHING

Since everything is a one-and-done game, you never know what could happen. The impossible suddenly becomes possible in March — that’s why having a strong coaching staff and matchups can help you pick the winning team. Learning more about coaching experience and style can go a long way when teams are nearly equal, or the tournament gets to its late stages. The greatest coaches are able to maximize their team’s strengths and minimize the opponent’s strengths.

HISTORICAL UPSETS

As said earlier, everyone LOVES a good upset. While the high seeds seldom go down early, there have been many competitive games between 1vs16 and 2vs15 seeds. Historically, upsets have occurred the most with matchups between the middle-tier seeds; these include 4vs13, 5vs12, 6vs11, 7vs10, and 8vs9. If you’re looking for a Cinderella-run, one of these lower seeds might be your best bet.

GO FULL DEGEN

There is no strategy here other than apeing into a bracket. Whether you make your picks based on which team has a better mascot, or you bet on the better party school; there’s no rules when you go full degen. Since you can create unlimited entries, it can be fun making a few less-serious brackets because you never know what can happen in March.

My favorite degenerate theory of the year?

Despite an inconsistent year, there’s NO WAY the NCAA won’t get Coach K his last title with Duke. The Duke Blue Devils will be the national champions.

Conspire away, degens.
