This week we’ve been discussing the beat ’em up genre and how we’re going to introduce its elements into El Tunche.

First off, we looked at several referential games, both old and new. Rampage Knights (Rake in Grass, 2015) and Lost Castle (Hunter Studio, 2016) are great contemporary examples of what we aim to achieve, and Double Dragon (Technōs Japan, 1987) and TMNT: Turtles in Time (Konami, 1991) stand the test of time and bring plenty of good ideas to the table.

What we’ve basically gathered is that we need a combat-oriented game with plenty of enemies and a whole system of combo attacks for each of our characters. The enemy part is pretty much covered, considering we already have four types of them ready to be fought. And although we’re still giving some more thought to the attack system, we’re on our way to great things.

What else do you think we should take into account regarding beat ’em ups? We’d love to read your comments and suggestions!

Next week I’ll be posting some more news and updates about our progress with El Tunche. Don’t forget to follow LEAP’s Vault of Knowledge, to learn more about us and our games.
