Tips for passing the NY driver’s test — on the first try.

The driver’s exam might seem intimidating. But, being successful can be easy if you prepare the right way. Here are some tips to calm your nerves going into the test and make your studying more effective.

Know the Exam Layout
The exam is 20 multiple choice questions, all coming from information in the driver’s manual. In order to pass you need to get 14 questions right. Additionally, you must answer atleast 2 of 4 questions about road signs correctly. Once you finish the 20 question, you will know how you did.

Read the Driver’s Manual Cover to Cover
The best way to get started is to get the official New York Driver’s Manual. You can pick it up at the DMV or download a PDF online. It’s free and has all the information you need to know about the rules of the road and driving safety tips.

While the driver’s manual is long and some of the information might seem obvious, it’s important to read the whole thing. The test could include questions that are just small facts from the manual. If you skim, you could miss important information.

While part 1 of the book (chapters 1–3) contain information that are not on the test, it is still good information to know about having a driver’s license and owning a car.

Know your road signs
At least four of the questions on the quiz are going to be about road signs. And it is required that you get at least two of these questions right. Make sure you understand what each sign means that way you can guarantee to pass this part of the test. Chapter 4 of the manual tells you what all the road signs mean. Plus, there is an additional chart in the manual laying out each road sign.
