Love, Animation, and Romance: Aichi’s Ghibli-Themed Matchmaking
Aichi Prefecture hosted a unique matchmaking event inspired by the world of Studio Ghibli. Matchmaking, known as “Konkatsu” in Japan, is an activity where individuals seek romantic partners with the intention of marriage. Eligibility for participation required individuals to live, work, or study in Aichi Prefecture, be single, and be between the ages of 20 and 39. Additionally, being a fan of Studio Ghibli’s animated films was a must.
The event took place at the “Aichi Earth Expo Memorial Park,” home to the Ghibli Park. Participants were grouped into teams of six, with three men and three women each, and they explored the park together, seeking out Ghibli-related public art. The budget for this event was set at 9.77 million yen.
Japan is facing a population decline, with rural areas being particularly affected. Various measures are being implemented in suburban areas to increase the number of migrants and boost birth rates. While it’s uncommon for local governments to organize matchmaking events, many such events typically involve dinner dates. Recognizing the widespread love for Ghibli films in Japan, Aichi Prefecture planned this large-scale Ghibli-themed matchmaking event, aiming to accommodate 400 participants.
The response was overwhelming, with a staggering 2,249 applicants. One of the event organizers commented, “It seems many people are eager to find a romantic partner.” One reason for Japan’s declining marriage rate is the perception that marriage may lead to a loss of personal freedom. However, forming a couple based on a shared love for Ghibli suggests that partners might enjoy their shared interests without compromise.
