The Teachings of Tim Ferris

Learn how to work more effectively, waste less time & get more things done.

The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris is an absolute must read for anybody looking to create an improvement in their lifestyle.

Not only will this book teach you how to become more effective in less time.

The book shares a lot of actionable advice that you can start implementing the moment you stop reading it.

Key Ideas:

Become one of the “new rich”, a group of people that live a life full of freedom, the lives you think money will give you.

But here’s the catch, they’re not millionaires, they’re just living a whole lot smarter.

They have an online business that allows them to be mobile & flexible allowing you to have a moderately-passive income.

This allows them to live life on their terms.

Compare every decision with the worst thing that can happen.

Think about it, if you do the thing you’re so scared of doing, what is the worst that could happen? Is it that bad? Most likely, it’s not.

This way you’ll cultivate a character of taking action instead of procrastinating.

Do something you’re scared of every day. Living a successful life means always being willing to do what makes you uncomfortable.

Also, be willing to do the things others are not, don’t stick to the conventions of society.

To get more done, start using the 20/80 rule in your life. Do 20% of the tasks that get 80% of the results.

Realize that most of the work we do is just to fill time. Focus on the most important tasks.

More results in less time. This is the key to a life of freedom.

Go on a low-information diet, read & learn only about things that apply to your life today.

This way you won’t get the “paralysis by analysis” problem half of the world is dealing with.

They have so many options at all times that they choose to do nothing. Don’t fall into this trap

Batch-process tasks, this means doing similar tasks one after the other.
For instance, do all of the body-related tasks like working out, meditation, one after the other.

This way, your mind doesn’t have to switch context between tasks all the time; allowing you to work more effectively.

Always test the waters before spending money on creating a product.

Be sure there is a market for what you’re trying to sell.

One way of doing this is setting up a web store that does everything except accepting payments.

This way you’ll know that people want to buy your products because they actually wanted to spend money on it.

Focus on making your product more premium, this way you’re getting a higher profit margin.
Also, you’re going to be attracting higher quality customers since they’re probably not watching every penny.

Action Plan

  • Build on online business instead of starting a brick and mortar store.
  • Always ask yourself ‘what is the worst that can happen’ when you find yourself procrastinating on a decision.
  • Focus on getting the 20% of tasks done that get 80% of the results, this q-question helps a lot: “if I only did this one thing today, would I be happy”?
  • Go on a low-information diet, learn only what you need now.
  • Group similar tasks together and do them one after the other to prevent context-switching.
  • Always test the waters before spending money on creating a product. Get the customer to pay & then give them an error saying the product is out of stock to valid your idea.
  • Make premium products to attract higher quality customers & higher profit margins.
  • Delegate as many tedious tasks as possible to freelancers or whoever you can.

Never stop improving,

— Nick
