Screencast-O-Matic

Make a screencast directly through your browser, or use the program on your computer.


Screen-O-Matic is an online screenrecorder, that runs over your browser, but can also be downloaded on a Windows-computer. Sreencast-O-Matic comes in a free- and proversion.

We recommend that you use either Safari, Firefox or Chrome.

This guide take you through the free version of Sreen-O-Matic. You should be aware that the free version has a limit of 15 minutes recording, and it is not possible to edit your screencast.

There is no differences of functionality between the online- and download-version.

Record via your browser

  1. Go to http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/
  2. Click “Start Recording” in the right upper cornor

3. Then you click “Record Screencast”, and a plugin will be downloaded, that you need to install on your computer.

4. Click “Record Screencast” again, og click “Start program” in the pop-up window, as seen below.

Attention: It might be nessecary to enable plugins and Java-settings before the program can function.

Are you using the Crome-browser, click on the red cross in the right upper corner and push “Run all plugins” and update the site (push F5).

From hereon the following messages from Java may pop-up. Java is a web player, that you might know from using “Nem-id”. For Screen-O-matic to work proper, it is necessary, that Java also is running.

You can push “Later”, if you want to go on with Screen-O-Matic now.

4. Choose “Run”

5. When the program is ready, a frame and menu appear.

Before you start, check that your microphone is working; how much of your screen you want to record; and choose whether or not your webcam should be on.

6. When you’re ready, click on the record-icon (the red button). The program will make a count down from 3 and then start recording.

7. When you’re done with your screencast click “Done”.

8. Then a preview window will turn up. Here you can see and hear your screencast. If you’re not satisfied with your screencast, click “Redo” and start over, or you may continue your present recording by uploading of save you recording.

Notice that it is not possible to edit the recording, or remove the webcam function as in earlier versions of the program.

9. If you are satisfied with your screencast, we’ll recommend uploading it to YouTube or save it on your computer.

10. If you choose to save it on your computer, we recomment using the mp4-format.

Install Screencast-O-Matic on your computer — PC users only

  1. Download Screen-O-Matic here
  2. Install the program and click “Run Screen-O-Matic” and then “Finish”.
  3. Choose “Use FREE version”.

4. This frame and menu will apear when the program is ready.

To the users that use Blackboard as an online platform for teaching

If you choose to upload your screencast directly to YouTube, you can benefit from this in Blackboard by embedding it in e.g. a blog.
