What is the difference between survey and testing?

Survey and Test are not the same, but the procedure for creating them is the same. In this guide, we will setup a survey but the step for test are the same.

  • Survey is an anonymous studies aimed at the overall data for all students.
  • Testing is not anonymous, and goes on each student's response.

When you create a survey/test in Blackboard, you must go through many steps. So be prepared that it may take some time to create. But when you have create a survey/test it can easily be reused in other courses.

1. Create a new survey

  • Create a new “Item”
  • Select "Assessments" and then "Survey"
  • Under "Create a New Survey" select "Create"
  • Press submit.
  • All your previously created surveys will appear on the list. This allows to easily reuse the same survey in several courses.
  • Fill in the information about your survey (name, description and instruction)

2. Add questions

  • Now your survey is created. Then you must created the questions.
  • Select "Create Question" to see your the list of options.

Multiple Choice

  • You can, for example. choose to make a "Multiple Choice", where students must answer a series of questions with correct/incorrect answers.
  • Then you must fill 5 fields about the questions.

  • Give your multiple choice a name in the "Question Title"
  • Then type in your question in the "Question Text"

  • Here you decide how the response options should be presented.

  • Here you select the number of possible answers to your question.
  • Type the possible answers in the texteditor under "Answer 1,2,3 ...etc"
  • Remember to set the correct answer in the tick box.

  • Here you have the option of adding categories, topics, level of difficulty and keywords. This is optional.
  • You can use this information later to find x number of survey with the topic learning or level of difficulty hard.

5.field

  • Here you can write a guiding note for the students.
  • Now you can either choose to add another question to your survey by selecting the "Submit and Create Another", or you can exit by pressing "Submit"
  • Select “Submit” and you have now added a multiple choice for your survey, and your question will appear on the survey canvas.
  • You can add more muliple choice, or other other type of questions under the "Create Question".

3. Give students access to your survey

  • Now you need to make your survey available for the students.
  • Go to the bottom of the page and select "OK".
  • Then select your newly created survey under "Add an Existing Survey".
  • Press "Submit"
  • Now you will be asked to fill six field.

  • Select what infomation about the survey the students can see.

  • Choose availability for students (default if no). Choose number of attempts, force completion, timer etc.

3.field

  • Here you can choose whether individual students or groups of students are expetions and should no do the survey.

4.field

  • Create a deadline for submission, and whether it should be possible for students to answer after the deadline.

5.field

  • Give your students the opportunity to see their own answers and get feedback.

6.field

  • Choose how the survey should be presented to the students.
  • All questions at once? One at a time? Random?
  • When you're finished, press "Submit"
  • You have now created and shared a survey of the students.

4. See the results

  • Find results for "Grade Center" in the "Control Panel" in the left menu.
  • Select "Full Grade Center". Here for you a list of the students.
  • Find the column of your survey and click the arrow.
  • Then select "Attempts Statistics" to view the results for all students.
  • Select "Download Results" to download the results as an CSV or Excel file.
