1. Open Quicktime

  • You can find Quicktime under “Applications/Programs”, and open it by double-clicking.
  • It’s an advantage to let Quicktime remain in the dock, so it’s easy to retrieve. Right-click on the icon when the programme is open. Select “Options” and “Keep in Dock”.

2. Start recording

  • Right-click on the icon in the dock.
  • Select “New Screen Recording”
  • This creates a new recorder where you have the opportunity of choosing audio input and emphasis of mouse click. Please note, the sound may be switched off by default. Therefore, make sure to check whether this is the case.
  • Press the red button.
  • Click anywhere on the screen to start recording in full-screen mode, or select an area for recording with the mouse.
  • Your recording is now in progress.
  • You stop your recording by pressing the small icon in the top menu.
  • You have now recorded your screencast.

3. Trim your recording

  • Now you can trim your video by pressing cmd + t.
  • Drag the ends to make the cut shorter.
  • Finish by clicking “Trim”.
  • When you record a PowerPoint presentation, you must start recording in Quicktime, then open PowerPoint and execute your presentation in full screen.
  • When the presentation is done, you can stop your recording and use the “trim” tools to remove the start and finish.

4. Share your recording

  • Save your recording by pressing cmd + s, and choose where you want to save it.
  • Your screencast will be saved on your desktop as a .mp4 video file (it might say .mov after the title, but it’s still a .mp4 file).
  • You can share the file through YouTube, Vimeo, Dropbox, Google Drive, or the like.

4. If you use Blackboard (Aarhus University)

  • If you use Blackboard, we recommend that you upload your video to YouTube. This will give the best playback results for all your students, independent of their computer, smartphone, or tablet.
  • You can upload to YouTube directly from Quicktime by choosing File — Share — YouTube, and follow the instructions.
